Loyola takes one of two Saturday, splits series with LSUA

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Junior pitcher Michael Toscano pitched a six-inning shutout in Game 2 Saturday, as he helped the Wolf Pack to a 3-0 win

WESTWEGO – For the second day in a row, the Loyola Wolf Pack split a pair of games with LSU Alexandria, as both teams earned shutout wins on Saturday. The Generals opened the day with a one-hit, 4-0 win over the Wolf Pack but Loyola evened the series with a 3-0 win in the second game of the doubleheader.

Loyola is now 7-2 overall and it'll match up with No. 8 Freed-Hardeman for a four-game series next Friday and Saturday.

Game 1: LSU Alexandria 4, Loyola 0

The Wolf Pack's bats were stifled in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, only recording one hit to LSUA's seven. The Generals scored single runs in the third and fourth inning, then hung two on the board in the sixth.

Brenden Taravella got the start on the bump and pitched well, giving up two earned runs on six hits in his five innings of work. Matthew Champagne gave up two earned runs as well, but he only allowed one hit in his two innings.

Loyola put two runners on base in each of the second and third innings, then loaded the bases in the fifth, but it couldn't find the timely hit in those situations. Allen Dennis recorded the team's only hit in the fifth.

Game 2: Loyola 3, LSU Alexandria 0

Loyola quickly rebounded from the first game of the day by scoring two runs in the second inning. Payton Alexander led off the frame with a walk, then advanced to second on an error by the pitcher. Ross Selvaggi singled to put runners on the corners and Alexander scored on a wild pitch while Selvaggi moved to second. With one out, Brandon Wilson Jr. made it 2-0 with a double to right field.

The Wolf Pack made it 3-0 with a lone run in the fourth. With one out, Chandler Strader was hit by a pitch and he moved to second on a wild pitch during the next at-bat. After Wilson Jr. walked, Strader advanced to third on a passed ball and later scored off the bat of Jase Biehl

While Loyola scratched three runs across, Michael Toscano was dealing on the mound. He struck out seven and allowed just three hits during his six innings of work. Brett Fisackerly earned the save when he came in to pitch with two on in the seventh inning. The junior sat down the only three batters he faced to finish the game.

Toscano pitched three 1-2-3 innings, too, and the Generals only had two runners in scoring position in the game.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Jeremy Kennedy

"The highlight of the day was the pitching performance by Mickey. He did a tremendous job of being aggressive and setting the tone. This was a weekend of good baseball and I am proud of the way we competed all weekend. We saw some things that we can clean up and improve for next weekend, as we have a very good Freed-Hardeman team coming to town."
