Box Score 2 The Wolf Pack scored 32 total runs and recorded 27 hits in a doubleheader sweep Saturday against Rust College
WESTWEGO – The Loyola Wolf Pack improved to 13-4 overall with a pair of dominating wins over Rust College Saturday at Segnette Field. Loyola started the day with a 24-0 win then it earned an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
Loyola and Rust College will square off again on Saturday with another doubleheader, this time starting at 1 p.m.
Game 1: Loyola 24, Rust College 0 (5 innings)
Wyatt Lankford and Lawrence Frishberg were outstanding on the mound, combining to throw a perfect game in the shortened game. Lankford faced the minimum in his perfect four innings of work while striking out three, and Frishberg needed just nine pitches to sit down Rust in order in the fifth.
As hot as the pitchers were for the Wolf Pack, the offense was equally as hot. Loyola collected 18 hits and scored in every inning to plate the 24 runs. The biggest damage came in the 10-run fourth, where 14 batters came to the plate. The frame started with a solo home run by Payton Alexander, then Landon Trosclair, Zach Cook, Aaron Davis, Allen Dennis, Michael Toscano and Nathan Law all picked up RBI. Cook and Toscano recorded two RBI on their base hits, as Cook singled to left and Toscano doubled.
Selvaggi led the team with four hits and three runs, while Toscano, Law, Trosclair and Cook all had three RBI each to pace the offense.
Loyola started the game with three runs in the first, a lone run in the second and four in the third before the big fourth inning. Six runs in the fifth capped off the scoring outburst.
Game 2: Loyola 8, Rust College 0
Loyola's runs came later in Game 2 than it did in the first game. The Wolf Pack got on the board in the first inning, then scored the bulk of the runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Brandon Duhon led off the first inning with a double to shallow left-center, then moved to third and scored on consecutive sacrifice flies. Dennis picked up the RBI on the second sac fly.
The game stayed a 1-0 Loyola lead until it scored two runs in the fourth. After Patrick Crifasi doubled with one out, Gabriel Trastoy hit his first home run of the season to put the Wolf Pack up 3-0. In the fifth, Cook reached base on a bunt single and later scored when Dennis smacked his fourth homer of the season. Alexander scored off Jase Biehl's double to make it a 6-0 game.
In the sixth, Duhon's triple scored Davis and a sac fly from Cook scored Duhon to finish Loyola's scoring.
Wes Anderson pitched six innings while racking up seven strikeouts. He allowed just five hits and walked none, too.
Pack Facts
With a hit in each game, Payton Alexander extended his hitting streak to eight games and extended his on-base streak to 17 games.
Brandon Duhon swiped four bases in Game 1, giving him 25 for the season. He's now fifth in Loyola history for steals in a single season.
Loyola's 18 hits in Game 1 was the most its recorded in a game this season, and the 24 runs was a season-high as well.
With 15 stolen bases in the two games, Loyola now has 79 for the season. No other team in the NAIA has more.
The Wolf Pack's pitching staff entered Saturday eighth in the NAIA with a 2.27 earned run average. After pitching two shutouts Saturday, the Wolf Pack now has a 2.05 ERA.
