Loyola's men's team defeated Martin Methodist 5-1 while the women's team earned a 5-0 sweep of Blue Mountain
MOBILE, Ala. – The Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Men's and Women's Tennis Championships began on Wednesday at Mobile Tennis Center, where both Loyola University New Orleans teams earned first-round victories.
The No. 14 Wolf Pack women's team (11-8) started out the tournament strong, not losing any matches in a 5-0 win over Blue Mountain.
Manuela Alban and Miranda Cano teamed up to get the day started with an 8-2 doubles win at the No. 2 position. Nadja Ochsner and Chandler Harmon, now 12-3 as a doubles pairing, also won in an 8-2 result on court three. The men's team (7-11) will also be advancing to the semifinals after a 5-1 takedown of Martin Methodist.
The RedHawks were able to gain a point in doubles, but the Wolf Pack earned the other two, including an 8-0 win by Tiger Cheung and Joseph Short at the No. 1 spot. The team of Emilio Saenz and Ernesto Telles also scored a doubles victory, 8-5 on court three.
In singles, Short had another strong performance on court five, winning 6-1, 6-1. Samuel Marin followed him with a 6-1, 7-5 win on court three, setting up Cheung to clinch the match for the Pack on court one, which he did with a 6-1, 6-4 victory.
