Both tennis teams will now look ahead to the SSAC Championships, which begin April 24 in Mobile, Ala.
NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams closed out the regular season with a matchup against top-ranked William Carey on Monday in City Park, dropping two hard-fought matches.
"It was a tough turnaround for us to play Mobile yesterday, get back late at night, and play William Carey today which is one of the best teams in the country," said assistant coach Eduardo Garcia.
After their comeback victory against No. 11 Mobile on Sunday, the Wolf Pack women's team (10-8, 4-2 SSAC) once again faced a tough task against the No. 4 Crusaders (10-2, 5-2 SSAC), who sit atop the standings in the Southern States Athletic Conference.
The Pack opened up the match with a strong doubles performance, with Koral Martinez and Arianna Pepper winning 8-4 on court one, and Nadja Ochsner and Chandler Harmon continuing their great doubles season with an 8-6 win on court three. Manuela Alban would then open singles play with a perfect 6-0, 6-0 result on court two, but the Crusaders were victorious on every other singles court, finishing the match with a 6-3 team score.
In the men's match, the Pack (6-11, 3-3 SSAC) earned a point in doubles with Galileo Cabrales and Samuel Marin claiming an 8-5 win at the No. 2 position, but William Carey (10-3, 4-1 SSAC) didn't drop any matches for the remainder of the day, winning by an overall score of 8-1.
Will the regular season now complete, both Loyola tennis teams now look ahead to the SSAC Championships, which begin on April 24 in Mobile, Ala.
"Overall, both teams made a great effort and it's been a heck of a season," said Garcia. "We are extremely proud of both teams and will now get some rest before we head back to Mobile to play our conference championships."
