Tiger Cheung got the lone singles win of the day against the NCAA DI opponent
NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams each faced off against NCAA Division-I opponent Nicholls State in City Park on Tuesday, with the Colonels winning both matches.
"Today's match was really more about getting ready to finish the conference season off strong," said head coach Kyle Russell.
The Wolf Pack men's team, now at 6-9 on the season, fought hard to begin the match but eventually surrendered the doubles point, with the team of Ernesto Telles and Emilio Saenz barely being edged out in an 8-6 tiebreak.
"The guys were up in all three doubles," Russell said, "and just took their foot off the gas pedal which they will learn from."
Tiger Cheung improved his season record at No. 1 singles to 4-1 after earning a 1-6, 7-5, 10-8 victory. The Colonels picked up three more singles wins to take the match 4-1, although Galileo Cabrales and Telles each were playing well on their respective courts before the match was stopped.
"It was great to get Galo back in the singles lineup and he was playing well before his match stopped," said Russell. "Tiger was able to pull out a win against a good player at one, so that was a good high note to end on."
On the women's side, Nicholls didn't drop any matches in the 5-0 result, as the Wolf Pack dropped to 9-7 on the season. Chandler Harmon and Gabrielle Terranova were each playing well in their singles matches, however, with Harmon up a set as the day finished.
The Wolf Pack will now hit the road for a single match against conference foe Mobile on Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. Both Rams squads were ranked in the top 15 in the most recent NAIA Coaches' Poll.
