The women sweep the Mariners 5-0 while the men battle back in singles but fall 5-2
MACON, Ga. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams each began a four-game swing in Georgia at the John Drew Smith Tennis Center on Saturday as they took on Coastal Georgia.
The 19th-ranked women's team picked up their fifth win of the season, beating the Mariners in a 5-0 shutout.
"The girls were extremely professional today," said head coach Kyle Russell "Good readiness and spirit."
The Wolf Pack won all three women's doubles matches, beginning with an 8-0 shutout by the duo of Koral Martinez and Arianna Pepper on court one. The team of Nadja Ochsner and Chandler Harmon also played well on court three, winning 8-1. Manuela Alban and Catherine Jordan finished out doubles play with an 8-4 win on court two, as the Wolf Pack took a 3-0 team advantage into singles.
Needing only two singles victories to grab the team win, the Pack started off well, with Pepper not dropping a game at the No. 3 spot, winning 6-0, 6-0, to set up the match-clinching 6-3, 6-2 victory at No. 4 from Ochsner.
"Nadja was playing tennis that was just plain fun to watch," Russell said. "Courts one through six were all focused, they are getting better and better every day."
The men's team, now at 4-4 on the season, fell in a hard-fought 5-2 decision to the No. 22 Mariners.
The Pack went down 2-0 early in doubles, but the team of Joseph Short and Ernesto Telles closed it out strong with an 8-6 victory on court three.
"The guys showed a lot of fight," Russell said. "Doubles started out sluggish but Joey and Ernesto managed to pull out a win to give the team a spark going into singles."
Samuel Marin carried the momentum into singles, dropping just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 result at the No. 3 position. Coastal Georgia closed out singles play with wins on the fourth, first, and sixth courts to clinch the match 5-2.
"Sam made quick work of his opponent and we had some real momentum," said Russell. "Tiger and Ernesto looked like they were going to win their matches, but we ended up losing three tough matches to end the day. They're a good team, and I was really proud of the never-ending fight our guys showed."
Both Wolf Pack teams continue their Georgia trip with matches against SCAD Savannah tomorrow, March 3, at 11 a.m. The Bees are ranked 11th on the women's side, while their men's team is unranked.
