Pack Fall in Game One With Brewton-Parker 8-6

Loyola is unable to come back from a big seven-run inning in the eighth by the visiting Barons

WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team came out on the losing end of a close game at Segnette Field Friday night, falling to Brewton-Parker in game one of their three-game series 8-6.

The Wolf Pack (11-13, 0-7 SSAC) were first to jump into the run column, as Michael Toscano reached on a single to left field before coming around to score on an error by the shortstop. The Pack added another run in the following frame on a single from Toscano, who brought across Brandon Wilson Jr. after he led the inning off with a base hit of his own.

While the Barons (11-18, 4-3) plated a run in the fifth, starting pitcher Brenden Taravella kept the visiting offense quiet the rest of the night, holding them to the single run through six innings. In the eighth however, Brewton-Parker would jump out in front via a seven-run frame, making it a 8-2 game.

The Pack would climb back in it in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a two-run triple from Charlie Seiter. Unable to add any more runs in the bottom of the ninth after keeping their deficit at two in the top of the inning, Loyola would drop game one of the series by a final score of 8-6.

The two teams will meet again tomorrow for a doubleheader at Segnette Field beginning at noon.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust

"I thought Brenden pitched a great game for us. Brewton-Parker is a good hitting team, but he really handcuffed them for six innings. He was up to 96 pitches after the sixth inning, so we decided to make a move, unfortunately Gary didn't have his best stuff today and they swung the bats well in the eighth inning. I thought their starting pitcher did a good job against us, but we let him off the hook a couple of times. I'm proud of the guys for swinging the bats late in the game and giving us a chance. We just weren't good enough tonight so we'll have to come back tomorrow and try to get a win in game two at 12 o'clock."
