Samuel Marin scored a straight-sets victory in singles, while two of the men's doubles matches went to tiebreakers
NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's teams traveled across town to take on the NCAA-DI University of New Orleans on Saturday at the University Tennis Center.
The Wolf Pack men's team (2-1) dropped the first doubles match 6-2, but the matches on courts two and three both went to tiebreakers. The Privateers (5-5) were able to edge out the Pack 7-3 in each tiebreak match, however, claiming the doubles point.
"It's early in the season and so it was certainly not the clean tennis we were looking for today," said head coach Kyle Russell. " However, I think the guys showed a lot of fire in the doubles which made up for some very fixable mistakes."
In singles, Samuel Marin had an impressive showing on court three, earning a 6-4, 6-4 victory. UNO would take wins on every other court to win the match 6-1. The last court to finish was court five, where Ernesto Telles played a tight three-set match, with UNO's Samuel Armand barely taking a 6-4, 6-7 (4), 10-8 win.
"Sam had a very solid win and there were flashes of good tennis on the other courts as well," said Russell. "As the season progresses I am confident we will play more consistently throughout the entirety of the match."
Loyola's women's team (2-1) also dropped all three doubles matches, with the Privateers (3-0) only surrendering three games across the three courts.
"The women have been dealing with a lot of illness and injuries early on and I'm confident that the quality of tennis will rise as we get healthy," said Russell. "This was great experience for our young team."
In singles, it was all Privateers, as they swept the Pack on all courts. Catherine Jordan was able to force a third set in her match on court four, but UNO claimed a 6-0, 3-6, 6-0 victory.
"I think we are a lot closer to this team than we showed but we will have plenty of matches this year to ratchet things up," said Russell. "I'm excited to get back on the court tomorrow against Xavier."
Loyola's men's and women's tennis teams will each take on Xavier tomorrow at the XULA Tennis Center in New Orleans. Both Xavier's men's and women's teams rank third in the NAIA.
