The two teams were able to play the first game in a scheduled doubleheader before rain halted game two
WESTWEGO, La. – Getting one game in before a storm entered the area, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team defeated Rust College 13-2 in a seven inning game at Segnette Field Saturday night.
The Wolf Pack (7-6) jumped in the run column early, with Zachary Cook hitting a sac-fly to center in the second inning to bring Jesse Jordan across home plate. However, the third inning saw Loyola pile on eight more, with Payton Alexander slapping a double into leftfield to score Allen Dennis, before a single from Charlie Seiter brought in Michael Toscano to make it a 4-0 game. Later in the inning, Nathan Law doubled up the middle and brought in both Jase Biehl and Cook, with a single from Brandon Wilson Jr. in the next plate appearance for the Pack scoring Law to make it a 9-0 contest.
While the Bearcats (1-8) were able to plate a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning, Loyola responded with four more of their own, highlighted by a two-RBI triple from Cook to deep right-centerfield. The score would remain at 13-2 for the remainder of the game, as A.J. Smith threw six innings and struck out six, before Khourtland Fears came in to close out the final inning.
With a storm rolling in after the top of the first inning of game two, the series was shortened to three games, with tomorrow's doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Segnette Field.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"I thought A.J. Smith pitched well for us, and we played really well defensively. That should be the norm, but it's been hard for us to do lately, so we've really been concentrating on defense. We swung the bats well as well, it wasn't just one or two guys, it was all across the lineup. I was really happy with our first game today, and we look forward to coming back tomorrow to try and win at 1 p.m."
