In a pair of doubleheaders, each team defeated Blue Mountain College and Belhaven University
JACKSON, Miss. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams opened the season Saturday on a high note, with each team earning victories over Belhaven University and SSAC-foe Blue Mountain College.
"It was a good start to the season for both teams," said assistant coach Eduardo Garcia. "We have a lot of room for improvement but we're happy to start off the season with a pair of wins."
The victories came in relatively dominant fashion for both teams, as the Wolf Pack only dropped two of the 36 matches played on Saturday.
Loyola's men's team opened the day with a 9-0 rout of Blue Mountain. The duo of George Fourmaux and Sebastian Gomez began doubles with an 8-0 win on court three. The Pack then picked up two 8-3 doubles wins with the team of Tiger Cheung and Joseph Short, as well as Alexander DePascual and Samuel Marin both turning in victories.
Short began singles play with his second win of the day, a 6-0, 6-1 triumph on court four, followed by Galileo Cabrales's match-clinching victory on court one, a 6-0, 3-2 match that ended due to retirement. Ernesto Telles, Marin, Fourmaux, and Cheung all also picked up victories against the Toppers.
The women's match against the Lady Toppers went similarly. The team of Chandler Harmon and Nadja Ochsner started off doubles with an 8-0 win on court two. Manuela Alban and Catherine Jordan teamed up for an 8-3 win on court three, and Arianna Pepper and Koral Martinez closed out doubles with an 8-2 victory on court one.
The Lady Toppers were able to take one of the six singles matches, but not before the Wolf Pack had already clinched the team win, with Martinez (6-0, 6-1) and Harmon (6-0, 6-0) earning victories on courts three and two. Jordan, Gabrielle Terranova, and Miranda Cano also picked up wins as Loyola cruised to an 8-1 team victory.
The success for both teams continued in the second act of Saturday's doubleheader, where the teams took on Belhaven. The men's side once again went undefeated in doubles play, with the team of Cabrales and Gomez starting off doubles with a court three win. Short and Telles teamed up for an 8-2 win on court two, and the duo of DePascual and Marin once again closed out doubles with the third Loyola win.
The Blazers were able to open singles play with a win on court two, but the Wolf Pack responded with victories on every other court, including Fourmaux (6-2, 6-0) on court three and the match-clinching 7-6(3), 6-2 win on court four by Short. Cheung, Cabrales, and Gomez also all picked up victories en route to another 8-1 result.
In the women's match against Belhaven, the Pack were able to complete another doubles sweep. Harmon and Ochsner were first, with their second 8-0 win of the day on court two. Alban and Cano were next, giving the Pack another 8-0 win on the third court. Jordan and Terranova then finished doubles play with an 8-1 victory on court one.
The Blazers were unable to take any wins from the Wolf Pack in singles, as Pepper and Ochsner each claimed 6-1, 6-0 victories to seal the team win. Martinez, Terranova, Cano, and Jordan all also picked up victories as the Wolf Pack closed out the day with a 9-0 result.
This also marked a big day for the Wolf Pack's freshman class, as Marin, Jordan, and Harmon were playing in their first official matches, with nine wins between the three of them on Saturday.
Loyola will return to New Orleans next week, but for a road match against the University of New Orleans beginning at noon.
