Tennis Teams Each Take Down Martin Methodist

The Wolf Pack are now a combined 4-0 at the SSAC Round Up, which continues Saturday against Middle Georgia State.

MOBILE, Ala. – Continuing their successful run at the annual SSAC Round Up, the Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams each claimed victories against Martin Methodist on Friday.

The Wolf Pack men's team, now 4-2 on the season, came out strong in doubles, beginning with an 8-2 win at the No. 1 spot from the team of Galileo Cabrales and Tiger Cheung. An 8-3 win on court two followed from Alexander DePascual and Samuel Marin, and Ernesto Telles and Emilio Saenz finished out doubles with an 8-5 win on court three.

"Man I was impressed with the way the guys came out and played doubles," said head coach Kyle Russell. "Emilio and Telles played their best match of the year. They were focused, creative and determined. Galo and Tiger along with Alex and Sam played fantastic doubles as well to put us up 3-0 going into singles. It was only a matter of staying in focused from there in out. That match was won on the doubles court today."

Cheung once again played strong in singles, only dropping one game in a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court two, with Telles clinching the match on court five, leading to a 6-3 team victory after Marin picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win on court four.

The 20th-ranked women's team (4-2) also began with solid performances in doubles, with Chandler Harmon and Nadja Ochsner starting off the match with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot. The RedHawks won the next match on court one, but the team of Manuela Alban and Catherine Jordan finished out doubles with an 8-4 win on court two.

In singles, the Wolf Pack got out to a fast start, with Jordan and Gabrielle Terranova only dropping a combined three games in their two singles victories on courts five and six. Martin Methodist picked up three wins on the top three flights, but Alban was able to clinch the match 5-4 for Pack with a 6-2, 7-5 result on court four, defeating the RedHawk women's team for the first time in program history.

"The girls found themselves in a battle today," said Russell. "Although we went up 4-1 quickly, I wasn't sure if we would get that 5th point. The girls who lost kept competing till the end and Manuela came through big time in her first singles match of the year."

Loyola closes out the SSAC Round Up with each team taking on Middle Georgia State, whose men's and women's teams both rank in the top 15 in the NAIA.
