The Pack take down Bethel, 7-2 on the men's side, with the women completeing a 9-0 sweep
MOBILE, Ala. – The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams began play at the annual SSAC Round Up Thursday afternoon, with each team picking up a win over the Bethel Wildcats.
"We had a strong and dominant start to the Round Up today and I'm very proud of how our teams performed," said assistant coach Eduardo Garcia. "On the women's side, Andrea Martinez played her first official singles and doubles matches this season, and did not lose a single game throughout the day."
The 20th-ranked women got things going with a clean sweep in doubles, earning 8-0 wins on all three courts. The Wolf Pack kept it rolling in singles, as Gabrielle Terranova, Chandler Harmon and Andrea Martinez each picked up 6-0, 6-0 victories. On court three, Nadja Ochsner took her opponent down 6-1, 6-1, as Miranda Cano picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory on court five. Koral Martinez topped off the 9-0 team win for Loyola with a three-set game on court two, taking down her opponent 6-4, 3-6, 10-5.
The men opened up their match with the Wildcats by claiming each court in doubles, with Galileo Cabrales and Tiger Cheung picking up the first win at the lead court 8-1. With the Wolf Pack taking a 3-0 advantage into singles, George Fourmaux extended their lead to 4-0 with a 6-2, 6-2 win at court three. At court five, Jacob Abdella gave Loyola their fifth, and match-clinching point, defeating his opponent 6-2, 6-1.The two teams would split the remaining four matches at two apiece, bringing the final score to 7-2 in favor of the Wolf Pack.
"On the men's side, Emilio Saenz played his first official singles match this season and had a dominant win at the four position," said Garcia. "Overall, we are very excited about how our teams are working and competing, and we're ready to keep fighting the next two days when we play Martin Methodist and Middle Georgia."
Each team will continue the SSAC Round Up tomorrow with a 10 a.m. match against Martin Methodist.
