The Wolf Pack return home in their next matches to take on Our Lady of the Lake on March 16.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams took on William Carey on Wednesday evening in a tough conference matchup, with both Carey teams being ranked high in the NAIA.
"When playing a top-10 team, you have to bring everything you got from the beginning, and unfortunately we were not able to do that today," said assistant coach Eduardo Garcia.
The Wolf Pack men's team dropped an 8-1 decision to the No. 6-ranked Crusaders (5-2, 5-1), moving to 4-4 on the season and 4-2 in SSAC play. On the women's side, the Pack (4-6, 2-3) also fell in their match to the No. 12 Lady Crusaders (5-1, 5-0) by a score of 8-1.
"Nevertheless, Koral Martinez (JR/Lajas, Puerto Rico) did have a great win at the No. 1 position, and we had a great win from behind in the No. 2 spot in men's doubles," said Garcia.
Martinez scored a straight-set win to give the Pack a point. The point on the men's side was scored by the duo of Sean Presti (JR/Lesigny, France) and Tiger Cheung (FR/Hong Kong), who edged out their opponents 9-7 to close out doubles play on a high note.
"Another highlight of the day was Galileo Cabrales (SO/San Salvador, El Salvador)," continued Garcia, "who fought hard but lost in three sets against the reigning Conference Player of the Year."
Cabrales was able to gain an early lead by winning the first set 6-4 in his match against the All-American Vladyslav Ladygin, but the top player for the Crusaders came away with the victory after winning the final two sets 6-4, 6-0. Tiger Cheung also won the first set in his match, but eventually fell in a three-setter on court three.
This was the last of a long stretch of road matches for the Wolf Pack, as they will take a week break before resuming action at home, where both the men's and women's teams will play a match against Our Lady of the Lake on March 16 at 4 p.m.
