After five consecutive road games, the Wolf Pack will return home this coming weekend
ALEXANDRIA, La. - The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team dropped a doubleheader on the road against Louisiana State University of Alexandria Tuesday afternoon, falling in game one 9-7 before a 5-3 loss in game two.
In game one the Generals (10-13) jumped on the Wolf Pack (15-12) pitching staff early, scoring all nine of their runs in the first four innings. The Loyola bats came alive in the top of the fifth, with Brandon Wilson Jr. walking to lead off the inning before stealing second base. Mick Dubic reached base on a walk in the next at-bat, with Rawlings Elam connecting for a double two batters later, scoring both runners. Tre Mouriz followed that up with a pinch-hit single to put runners on the corners, before the Pack brought in their third run of the inning on an infield ground out that Elam was able to reach home plate on.
Alexander Acevedo and Michael Toscano would keep LSU-Alexandria off the board in the fifth and sixth inning, setting Loyola up for a chance to come back. In the top of the seventh, the Pack got things rolling immediately on a double by Dubic. Next, Zachary Cook reached base on a walk before Mouriz singled to load the bases. Another fielder's choice ground out brought one run in before Ben Condara singled to plate two more. Payton Alexander singled to load the bases, followed by a walk that scored one more. Loyola was unable to keep the rally going however, falling 9-7.
In game two the Generals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first, before adding a fifth in the third. In the fifth, the Pack got on the board, with back-to-back singles to lead off the inning from Allen Dennis and Wilson. Alexander would later double to deep left field to bring in Dennis, before another double, this time from Charlie Seiter scored both Wilson and Alexander. While Kyle Higginbotham and Brenden Taravella both pitched shutout innings to keep Loyola in it, the bats were not able to get going with the Pack falling in game two 5-3.
The Wolf Pack will return home to Segnette Field this weekend, hosting No. 1 Faulkner for a three-game series beginning on Friday, March 16th with a single game at 6 p.m.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"We played better than we played over this past weekend. We made a couple of mistakes tonight, but those couple of mistakes led to big innings for the other team, which ended up being the difference."
"It was encouraging that we were fighting tonight. I told the guys after the game, every team hits a rough spot during the season, but it's how you respond to it. Tonight, we took a step in the right direction and played cleaner. All in all, I'm disappointed to lose two games, but we bounced back and played well."
