The men's team claimed a 5-1 victory, while the women fell 5-2.
MOBILE, Ala. - Both of the Loyola University New Orleans men's and women's tennis teams faced off against Martin Methodist in a Friday matchup at the SSAC Roundup tournament in Mobile, Ala., where the men picked up a win and the women suffered their first conference loss.
The 5-1 victory for the Wolf Pack men's team improves their record to 3-2 overall and 3-0 in SSAC matches. The 5-2 loss for the women brings them to 2-3 and 1-1 in conference play.
The men's team earned their victory with one of their best performances of the year so far. The Pack swept doubles play, which was kicked off by an 8-1 victory on court two for the duo of Sean Presti (JR/Lesigny, France) and Tiger Cheung (FR/Hong Kong), their first doubles victory this season.
The team of Ernesto de Diego (SR/Panama City, Panama) and Alexander DePascual (JR/Metairie, La.) followed, winning their doubles match on court one to put Loyola up 2-0. Then on court three, Galileo Cabrales (SO/San Salvador, El Salvador) and Joseph Short (FR/Guaynabo, Puerto Rico) secured an 8-4 victory to send the Wolf pack into singles play up 3-0.
DePascual continued his success in singles, sweeping his opponent 6-0, 6-0 to give the Pack a 4-0 lead. Martin Methodist's Nicolas Galleguillo defeated Presti 6-4, 6-1 on court five, but that would be the RedHawks' only point of the match, as de Diego was able to clinch the match for Loyola with a 6-4, 6-1 victory on court four.
Now 3-0 in the tournament, the men look to continue their undefeated conference stretch in tomorrow's doubleheader against No. 13 Middle Georgia State and Blue Mountain College.
The women's squad also was looking to stay undefeated in conference play today after shutting out Bethel in yesterday's match.
The freshman team of Manuela Alban and Arianna Pepper kicked off doubles play with an 8-0 sweep on court two to give the Wolf Pack the first point of the match. The RedHawks, however, responded by winning the remaining doubles matches, as the Pack headed into singles play trailing 2-1.
In singles play, Loyola again notched the first point, with Nadja Oschner scoring a 6-1, 6-0 win on court four to tie it up at 2-2. Martin Methodist then won matches on courts six, two, and one to clinch a 5-2 victory.
The SSAC Roundup in Mobile concludes tomorrow, as both Loyola tennis squads will play matches against Middle Georgia, scheduled to start at 10 a.m. and Blue Mountain, slated for 1 p.m.
