MOBILE, Ala. - The Loyola University New Orleans men's tennis team earned their second-straight win on Saturday afternoon in a 5-0 sweep of Brewton-Parker College at the SSAC Roundup tournament in Mobile, Ala.
The Wolf Pack (2-2, 2-0) did not drop a set against the Barons (1-2, 1-1), who picked up their first win in program history yesterday against Blue Mountain, the final opponent for the Pack in the SSAC Roundup.
Sebastian Gomez (JR/Marietta, Ga.) and George Fourmaux (JR/Hammond, La.) paired up to give the Pack the first point of the day, scoring an 8-1 victory on court three to kick off doubles play. The duo of brothers Jacob Abdella (FR/Broussard, La.) and Brandon Abdella (SO/Broussard, La.) also picked up a win in doubles, finishing second with an 8-1 win on court two. The tandem of Ricardo Mercado (SR/Miami, Fla.) and Ernesto Telles then scored the third point in doubles for Loyola, notching their second-straight doubles win with an 8-3 score on court one.
Needing two more wins in singles play to grab the victory, the Pack quickly delivered. Gomez shut out Brewton-Parker's Caleb Bellamy 6-0, 6-0 on court five, earning the first singles point for Loyola. Telles then clinched the match for the Wolf Pack with a convincing 6-1, 6-0 win on court one.
The win marks the second conference victory for the Wolf Pack, as they've now won their first two matchups in the SSAC Roundup tournament. Loyola finishes up a match against Martin Methodist tonight before returning to the courts tomorrow for another SSAC doubleheader with Middle Georgia and Blue Mountain.
