Loyola baseball drops two games against Martin Methodist College on Saturday

Wolf Pack now 18-22 overall and 4-10 in the SSAC. Loyola will take on Coastal Georgia at home next weekend in a three-game series.

After weather forced a rescheduling and a cancellation yesterday, the Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team finally made it Segnette Field on Saturday afternoon, to take on Martin Methodist College in a key SSAC doubleheader.

The visiting RedHawks proved too much for the Wolf Pack at home, winning game one 8-1, before earning the 6-5 come-from-behind victory in game two.

With the losses, Loyola drops to 18-22 overall and 4-10 in SSAC action. Conversely, Martin Methodist improves to 16-12 on the year and 5-6 in conference play following the victories.

Game One: Loyola 1, Martin Methodist 8

Luis Anguizola (JR/David, Chiriqui, Panama) led the way for the Wolf Pack in game one; collecting two hits, one home run and one RBI.  Blake Toscano (JR/Metairie, La.), Rawlings Elam (SO/Houston, Tx.) and Alexander Lorenzo (JR/Miami, Fla.) each collected a hit in the loss.

On the mound, Kevin Lindsey (SR/Baton Rouge, La.) (5-4) got the loss after giving up six runs (four earned) on eight hits in 3.0 innings pitched.

The RedHawks took a commanding lead in game one, putting up eight runs in the first five innings to go up 8-0.

Loyola's only run of the game came in the bottom of the sixth, when Anguizola sent his six homer of the year over the centerfield wall to bring the score to 8-1.

Neither team was able to manufacture any runs in the seventh to give the visitors the 8-1 victory in game one.

Game Two: Loyola 5, Martin Methodist 6

Rawlings Elam had a huge game for the Wolf Pack in game two; tallying two hits, one run and team-high two RBI. Lorenzo, Britt Pellegrin (JR/Bourg, La.) and Anguizola each collected a RBI, with Anguizola recording a game-high 12 putouts.

Daniel Posway (SR/Sugarland, Texas) (1-5) got saddled with the loss in game two after surrendering five runs (three earned) on 10 hits with five strikeouts in 8.2 innings pitched.

After the RedHawks put up one in the first, Loyola took its first lead of the afternoon in the bottom of the inning. Toscano led off with a triple and he was brought in thanks to a single by Elam. Anguizola then doubled down the leftfield line to score Elam and bring the game to 2-1.  Lorenzo followed with a single to left to score Anguizola and put the home team up 3-1 after the first inning of action.

Neither team was able to put a run on the board over the next three innings and the score remained 3-1 entering the fifth.

In the top of the fifth, Martin Methodist was able to tack on one run to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the seventh, Jesse Jordan (FR/New Iberia, La.) crossed the home plate after a single by Elam to stretch the Wolf Pack advantage to 4-2 going in to the eighth.

Both teams added a run in the eighth inning and the scoreboard read 5-4 heading in to the final frame.

In the top of the ninth, the RedHawks capitalized on a few bases loaded opportunities to score three runs and take the 6-5 advantage entering the home half of the ninth.

The Wolf Pack managed to land two baserunners in the ninth but both would be left stranded to give Martin Methodist the 6-5 victory in game two.

Loyola returns to Segnette Field on Friday, April 8, to take on Middle Georgia for a doubleheader set to start at 4:00 p.m.
