Wolf Pack now 12-13 on the year. Loyola will take on SSAC foe Brewton-Parker College in a doubleheader at home on Saturday. First pitch between the Wolf Pack and Barons is set for 1:00 p.m.
Looking to snap a three-game skid, the Loyola University Baseball team welcomed Blackburn College to Segnette Field for a doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon. This doubleheader was originally set to be two single games on Tuesday and Wednesday, but due to the weather forecast, the two games were combined for a doubleheader on Tuesday.
Sparked by dominating offensive performances from Luis Anguizola (JR/David, Chiriqui, Panama) and Alexander Lorenzo (JR/Miami, Fla.), the Wolf Pack swept the Beavers on Tuesday, taking game one 5-1 and game two 8-4.
With the sweep, Loyola improves to 12-13 overall.
Game One: Loyola 5, Blackburn College 1
Alexander Lorenzo had a big game at the plate for Loyola, going for 2-for-3 with two RBI and a home run. Anguizola added two hits, one run and one RBI, while Jordan Wilson (SO/San Francisco, Ca. ) and Spencer Rosenbohm (SO/Daphne, Ala.) tallying the other two RBI in the victory.
On the mound, Jordan Green (JR/Shreveport, La.) (2-4) got the win after giving up no runs on four hits in 6.0 innings pitched.
Blake Toscano (JR/Metairie, La.) led off the bottom of the first with a single, and then stole his 20th base of the season, to give the Wolf Pack a man on second with no outs. Rawlings Elam (SO/Houston, Tx.) followed with a walk and then advanced on an error. Wilson scored Toscano from third with a groundout, before Anguizola singled to score one more and give Loyola the 2-0 lead after one inning.
Britt Pellegrin (JR/Bourg, La.) led off the second with a double and then advanced to third following a single by Daniel Pappas (SR/Chicago, Ill.). Pellegrin would score after a single by Rosenbohm and the scoreboard read 2-0 heading in to the third.
In the fifth, Anguizola collected his second hit of the game to land a runner on with no outs. Lorenzo then stepped to the plate and sent a rocket over the centerfield wall to stretch the advantage to 5-0.
The Beavers tacked on one run in the top of the seventh but it was not enough as Loyola held on to earn the 5-1 victory in game one.
Game Two: Loyola 8, Blackburn College 4
Anguizola recorded another huge game in the nightcap, going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs. Lorenzo kept his power on display in the second game after going 2-for-3 with three RBI and another homer. Toscano and Rosenbohm both went 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI in the win.
Stewart Campbell (JR/New Orleans, La.) (2-0) got the win after allowing two runs on four hits in 5.0 innings pitched.
Blackburn jumped out on top early, putting up two runs in the top of the first inning to go up 2-0.
Anguizola connected on a RBI single in the bottom of the inning to bring Loyola within one heading in to the second.
The Wolf Pack used some two-out magic in the bottom of the second inning, using RBI by Toscano, Anguizola, Lorenzo and Rosenbohm to grab the 5-2 advantage after two innings.
With the score stuck at 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth, Rosenbohm connected on a double to land a baserunner on with no outs. Anguizola doubled to score Rosenbohm, before Lorenzo smacked his second home run of the series to put the Wolf Pack up 8-2.
In the sixth, the Beavers put up two runs to cut the deficit to 8-4.
Joseph Kuchler (SO/Metairie, La.) kept Blackburn off the board in the top of the seventh to seal the win for the Wolf Pack 8-4 in game two.
Loyola will face SSAC foe Brewton-Parker at home on Saturday, March 12, with first pitch of the twinbill set for 1:00 p.m.
