The Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team wrapped up a three-game series at home on Saturday, welcoming No. 11 Louisiana State University-Shreveport to Segnette for a doubleheader.
The Wolf Pack fell in both contests on Saturday, dropping game one 6-2 in 11 innings before falling in game two 10-9 in ten innings.
With the losses, Loyola drops to 7-9 on the year.
Game One: Loyola 2, LSU Shreveport 6 (11 innings)
Jr. IF Luis Anguizola (David, Chiriqui, Panama/Colegio San Agustin)led the Wolf Pack with two hits and a game-high 16 putouts. Jr. C Daniel Pappas (Chicago, Ill./Mount Carmel) accounted for the lone Loyola RBI on Saturday, while So. DH Ben Condara (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas)and Jr. IF Britt Pellegrin (Bourg, La./South Terrebonne) each collected a hit.
On the mound, Fr. LHP Lorenzo Laurita (Miami, Fl./Belen Jesuit) (0-1) got saddled with the loss after giving up four runs (four earned) with three walks in 0.1 innings pitched.
The visitors put two runs on the board in the top of the first to take the early 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the first, So. IF Rawlings Elam (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas High) walked to give the Wolf Pack their first baserunner of the afternoon. Following a double play, the inning ended with the score remaining at 2-0.
Anguizola led off the bottom of the second with a single. With two outs,Pellegrin singled to right to land two men on for Loyola. The Pilots' Kevin Williams ended the second by recording his third strikeout of the inning to keep LSU Shreveport on top 2-0.
Sr. RHP Kevin Lindsey (Baton Rouge, La./Catholic) kept the visitors off the board in the top of the third, striking out two batters in the inning.
In the bottom of the six, Elam was hit by a pitch to give the home team a baserunner with two outs. So. OF Jordan Wilson (San Francisco, Calif./George Washington High) followed with a walk to give Loyola two men on with two outs. Following a popup, both runners would be left stranded and the score stayed at 2-0.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh, Condara singled to left field. Pellegrin followed with a walk to put two men on with one out. Pappascame up and smacked a single to right field to score Condara and Pellegrin came home after an error by the Pilots to knot the game at 2-2. With two outs, Toscano was intentionally walked to put two runners on. The inning ended with a groundout to the pitcher but not before the Wolf Pack were able to put up two runs and force extra innings.
The visitors were unable to land a baserunner in the top of the eighth and the Wolf Pack entered the home half of the inning in a position to pull the upset.
With one out, Anguizola singled to left. Jr. OF Alexander Lorenzo(Miami, Fla./Belen Jesuit Prep) followed with a walk to put two men on and force a pitching change by LSU Shreveport. The inning ended with a pop up and a ground out to keep the score at 2-2.
Neither team was able to put a run on the board over the next two innings and the score remained knotted at 2-2 heading in to the 11th.
The visitors exploded in the 11th, putting up four runs on two hits to take the commanding 6-2 advantage.
Condara started the 11th with a walk, but the next three batters struck out swinging to end the inning and the game with the visitors taking the 6-2 victory.
Game Two: Loyola 9, LSU Shreveport 10 (10 innings)
Lorenzo led the Wolf Pack with four hits, three runs, two RBI and a homer. Elam, Wilson, Anguizola, Condara and Liccardi each collected two hits, while Anguizola added a homerun. Toscano chipped in one hit, two RBI and a stolen base in the loss.
So. P Joseph Kuchler (Metairie, La./Grace King High School) (0-1) got the loss after surrendering four runs (three earned) on three hits in 3.0 innings pitched.
LSU Shreveport tacked on four runs to take the early 4-0 in game two. Down four, Anguizola started the second with a single to left. Anguizolaadvanced to second after a groundout and moved to third following a single by Condara. Liccardi singled to third to score Anguizola and putCondara on second. Jr. IF Peyton Senner (New Orleans, La./Brother Martin) followed with a bunt to advance the runners and load the bases. Following a strikeout, Toscano doubled to right to score Condara and Jordan to bring the score to 4-3 with two outs. The inning ended with a flyout and the scoreboard read 4-3 heading in to the third.
In the bottom of the third, Lorenzo singled to left to land one man on with one out. Lorenzo stole second and scored on a double by Lance Liccardi to knot the game at 4-4. The inning ended with a strikeout and score remained 4-4.
The Pilots quickly responded, tacking on one run in the top of the fourth to retake the lead at 5-4.
Loyola tied the score once again in the bottom of the fifth, with Lorenzonotching his third home run of the season to make the score 5-5.
With the score knotted at 5-5, Elam led off the bottom of the sixth with a walk. Elam advanced to second after a sacrifice by Wilson. After moving to third following a groundout, Elam scored thanks to a single by Lorenzo. Heading in to the top of the seventh, Loyola led 6-5.
LSU Shreveport put up two runs in the top of the seventh to retake the lead at 7-6.
In the bottom of the eighth, Anguizola sent a ringing shot over the left-center wall to put the home team up 8-7. Lorenzo followed with a single and he was brought in by Condara to give the Wolf Pack the 9-7 advantage heading in to the top of the ninth inning.
Down two with two outs, the Pilots' Robert Herrera sent a shot over the centerfield wall to tie the game at 9-9 and force extra innings in the second-straight game.
LSU Shreveport was the only team to manufacture a run in the extra frame and they escaped with the 10-9 victory in game two.
Loyola returns to Segnette Field on Tuesday, March 2, welcoming Marygrove College for a doubleheader slated to start at 4:00 p.m.
