The Loyola University New Orleans Baseball team returned to Segnette Field on Friday evening for game one of a three-game series with No. 11 Louisiana State University-Shreveport.
LSU Shreveport's pitching proved too much for the Wolf Pack in game one, as Loyola fell 10-0 to start the series.
With the loss, the Wolf Pack drop to 7-7 on the year heading in to tomorrow's doubleheader.
So. OF Jordan Wilson (San Francisco, Calif./George Washington High) and So. IF Ben Condara (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas)accounted for Loyola's two hits, while R-Jr. IF Blake Toscano (Metairie, La./Holy Cross) added one walk and a game-high three stolen bases in the loss.
On the mound, Jr. RHP Jordan Green (Shreveport, La./ Byrd) (1-3) got the loss after giving up five runs (four earned) on six hits in one inning pitched.
Oliver Christensen led the Pilots with three hits, three runs and one walk. Jared Vial led all players with three RBI to go along with two hits.
LSUS started the game on a tear, scoring seven runs in the first three innings to go up 7-0. With two outs in the bottom of the third, Toscanowalked to land just the second baserunner for the Wolf Pack. With So. IFRawlings Elam (Houston, Texas/St. Thomas High) up to bat, Toscanostole second for his team-best 13th stolen base of the season. With the count at 2-2 on Elam, Toscano swiped third to put a runner in scoring position. Elam then drew a walk to give the Wolf Pack runners on the corners with two outs. Loyola was unable to capitalize on the situation and the score remained 7-0.
With two outs, Condara recorded Loyola's first hit on the game in the bottom of the fourth, connecting on a fly ball to right field. Condara was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice to end the inning and keep the score at 7-0.
The visitors tacked on one more run in the top of the fifth to stretch their advantage to 8-0.
With two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Toscano collected his second walk of the afternoon. He followed that up by grabbing his third stolen base of the game to put one man on with two outs. Pilots pitcher Brandon Texiera ended the inning by striking out his ninth batter of the evening to keep the score at 8-0.
LSU Shreveport scored two runs in the top of the sixth to push the lead to 10-0 heading in to the home half of the inning.
In the sixth, Wilson connected on a first-pitch single to give Loyola one man on with no outs. Jr. IF Luis Anguizola (David, Chiriqui, Panama/Colegio San Agustin) followed with a single of his own to give Loyola two baserunners. Both runners would be left stranded and the score remained 10-0.
So. C Lance Liccardi (River Ridge, La./Holy Cross) led off the seventh by getting hit by a pitch and he was replaced by pinch runner Fr. IFCharlie Seiter (Mobile, Ala./Mcgill-Tooled Catholic High School). Seiter stole second but would be left on base after an inning-ending strikeout gave the visitors the 10-0 win in game one.
The Wolf Pack will cap of the three-game series with the Pilots tomorrow, Feb. 27, with a doubleheader set to start at 1:00 p.m.
