(New Orleans, La.) The Loyola University New Orleans men's tennis team took down Bethel University 5-4 this afternoon in their first match of the SSAC Roundup in Mobile, Alabama. The Wolf Pack women were edged out by the Wildcats 5-4.
The Wolf Pack men opened the day winning the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles competitions. The No. 1 doubles pair of sophomore Federico Mercado and junior David Mayhall took down Nick Slavik and Hunter Todd 8-4. Freshman Ricardo Mercado and sophomore Trivesh Singh paired up in No. 2 doubles play, defeating Barrett Phelps and Andrew Butler of Bethel 8-5.
In singles competition, Mayhall, Ricardo Mercado and freshman Anthony Zaleski each earned individual victories to help the Pack edge out the Wildcats. Mayhall won his No. 3 match against Todd 6-1, 2-6, 6-1, while Ricardo Mercado defeated Butler 6-1, 6-2 in the No. 4 spot. Zaleski dropped his first set to Jimmie Walker 4-6, but came back to win the second and tie-breaking set 6-3 and 10-3, respectively.
On the women's side, senior Meghan de Baroncelli and sophomore Alexa Mancuso downed Tori West and Victoria Dugan 8-0 in No. 1 doubles competition. de Baroncelli and Mancuso also won their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches 6-1, 6-1 and 6-4, 6-2, respectively. Junior Wesley Dejoie also defeated Christina Shands 2-6, 6-4 (10-4) at the No. 5 spot.
The Wolf Pack will resume action tomorrow as they face Martin Methodist and No. 3 Auburn Montgomery at 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., respectively.
