(Mobile, Ala.) The Loyola University men's and women's tennis teams concluded day one of play at the first Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Round-Up this evening in Mobile, Alabama.
The Wolf Pack women were swept 7-0 by No. 7 Brenau University this morning. Senior captain Meghan de Baroncelli fought hard in the No. 1 singles position against Brenau's Fatyha Berjane, winning seven individual games, but ultimately fell to Bejane 4-6, 3-6. Sophomores Alexa Mancuso, Lauren Rosales and junior Wesley Dejoie each won individual games, but dropped their matches to the Golden Tigers.
Both the men's and women's squads were also swept by Dalton State College later in the day. The pair of de Baroncelli and Mancuso came close to defeating Laura Winter and Chelsea Power of Dalton State in No. 1 doubles competition, but lost to the duo 7-9. de Baroncelli took on Winter in the No. 1 singles spot, falling to the Junior 3-6, 3-6.
On the men's side, the doubles team of junior David Mayhall and sophomore Federico Mercado put up a fight against the Roadrunners' duo of Nikolay Nikiforav and Adam Hornby, but slipped 6-8 in the No. 1 doubles spot. Freshmen pair Ernesto de Diego and Ricardo Mercado also came close to defeating Jose Ruda and Sebastian Dartnell, but fell to the Roadrunners 7-9. In singles play, Federico Mercado, Ricardo Mercado and de Diego each won individual games, but fell to their Dalton State opponents.
Both teams will resume action in Mobile tomorrow at 10 a.m. as they take on the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners. The Mariners women's squad is currently ranked 17 on the latest NAIA Poll, while the men secured a No. 14 position.
