(New Orleans, La.) Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball came back from a 12 point deficit in the first half to outlast Southern University New Orleans (SUNO) 66-60 tonight in The Castle. With this win, the Wolf Pack moves to 16-1 on the season.
Loyola jumped out to an early 8-5 lead on the Knights with 16 minutes remaining in the first, but SUNO responded and went on an 8-0 (13-5) run over the next four minutes. SUNO continued to press the offense and outscored the Pack 9-2 for the following five minutes, which brought the score to 22-10 with 7:45 remaining in the half. Sophomore Meghan Temple drained a two-pointer to cut the deficit to 10 with 7:27 left in the first. Neither team scored over roughly the next three minutes, but Loyola began to get in the zone at the end of first, cutting the Knights' lead to three (26-23) off a big three-pointer by senior Megan Whittaker with 21 seconds remaining.
The Wolf Pack got out to a blazing start to begin the second half. A field goal by senior Rebekah Greer with 19:21 to go pushed Loyola ahead of the Knights by one (27-26), but the Knights responded with a field goal by Breanna Wiley to jump ahead of Loyola at 18:59. Loyola went on a 9-0 run over the next two minutes, draining nearly every shot they took, including two back-to-back three-pointers by Whittaker off assists from senior Janeicia Neely. The Pack's largest lead of the night (13) came off a jumper by Neely with 11:04 remaining in the game, bringing the score to 47-34. SUNO began to close in on Loyola with roughly seven minutes to go (50-47), but the Pack continued to respond on offense, which ultimately led to a 66-60 victory over the Knights.
Three members of the Wolf Pack garnered double-digit point totals, led by Neely's 20 points. She went 6-of-11 from the field and 8-of-9 from the charity stripe and also added five assists on the night. This is the third straight game that Neely has posted 20 or more points to lead the Pack on offense. Temple posted her fourth double-double of the season, recording 14 points and 15 rebounds, making seven of her 14 attempts from the field. Whittaker drained a trio of three-point field goals and a layup for 11 points on the night. In addition to Temple, junior Shayne Charles came up big defensively for the Wolf Pack, grabbing 10 boards and also chipping in six points.
Brandy Broome and Shonte Dillon led the Knights (8-3) on offense with 17 points apiece. Broome shot 7-of-16 from the field and led the defensive effort with 10 rebounds. She also dished out six assists and secured five steals on the night. Dillon shot 29% from the field and went 7-of-9 from the free throw line and added six rebounds and four assists to aid the Knights on both sides of the ball.
The Wolf Pack will return to The Den this Saturday, January 24, when they take on SSAC opponent Faulkner University at 2 p.m.
