No. 11 Loyola shuts out Dillard

The Wolf Pack baseball team earned win No. 26 with a victory over the Bleu Devils on Tuesday

NEW ORLEANS – The 11th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack used five pitchers to combine for an 8-0 shutout win over Dillard Tuesday night. Charlie Nichols, Frank Fernandez, Payton Cooper, Carter Holstein and Hunter Ponson all saw time on the bump in the game to help the Pack improve their record to 26-9 overall.

Loyola (13-5 in SSAC) will welcome Brewton-Parker (11-22, 5-16) to Segnette Field this weekend for a conference matchup. The Wolf Pack and Barons will open the series with a game at 5 p.m. on Friday before a doubleheader at noon on Saturday ends the three-game set.

Nicholls started the game and worked the first 2.2 innings, then Fernandez, who received the win, pitched out of a jam in the third and threw the next two innings. Cooper pitched the next two frames without much trouble, and Holstein and Ponson completed the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the win.

Loyola finally got on the board in the sixth inning to break the scoreless tie. Brandon Mooney reached base on a fielder's choice, then pitch runner Ben Harris got into scoring position on a passed ball. Garrett Felix put the Wolf Pack ahead, 1-0, when he singled through the right side.

The Pack blew the game open with a seven-run seventh. Mooney walked with the bases loaded to start the scoring, then Felix picked up his second RBI of the game with a single, 3-0. Landon Manson's triple cleared the bases, 6-0, and with runners on the corners later in the frame, Collin Zeringue doubled to make it an 8-0 lead.
