Baseball wins eighth straight Friday

The Wolf Pack baseball team dominated Friday’s series opener at St. Thomas (Fla.)

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. – The No. 21 Loyola Wolf Pack continued their hot streak on Friday, winning their eighth straight game with another run-rule win. The Pack opened their four-game series at St. Thomas (Fla.) with a 12-0 performance in seven innings, marking the team's sixth run-rule win out of its 14 victories of the 2025 campaign.

Loyola and St. Thomas will play two more games tomorrow starting at 12 p.m. CST before Sunday's series finale.

It all started on the mound for Loyola, though, as Jake Cohen pitched six strong innings with five strikeouts to hold the Bobcats down at the plate. He scattered those four hits, too, allowing a couple of two-out singles that resulted in nothing in the first and fifth innings. His defense also cleared the base runners once they got on, as catcher Landon Trosclair threw out a would-be base-stealer in the third and Jake Mills started a double play to end the fourth.

Two doubles in the second inning got Loyola on the board first, with Landon Manson scoring Collin Zeringue and Trosclair bringing home Manson. Jaxon Buratt picked up an RBI single in the fourth to make it a 3-0 lead, then the Wolf Pack started to pull away even more with a three-run fifth inning. Cole Romero scored Brandon Mooney to start the scoring in that frame, 4-0, and back-to-back walks by Zeringue and Marcus Steen pushed Loyola's advantage to 5-0. Finally, a groundout off the bat of Buratt extended the lead to 6-0 through five innings.

Romero added an RBI groundout in the sixth, 7-0, then Loyola brought the run-rule into play with a five-run top of the seventh. It all came with two outs as well, and Trosclair was the first Loyola batter to pick up an RBI, 8-0. Garrett Felix scored two more with the bases loaded, then Romero tripled to score two more, 12-0, to finish off Loyola's scoring.

Pack Facts

  • Loyola has now won six games by the 10-run rule this year, including three consecutive games within the past week: 17-1 vs. Thomas on Saturday, 17-7 vs. Xavier on Tuesday, and 12-0 Friday vs. St. Thomas.

  • This was Loyola's second shutout win of the season. Both have ended with a final score of 12-0.

  • In his longest outing of the year, Jake Cohen threw six shutout innings and struck out five while allowing just four hits for his third pitching win of the season.

  • Caden Durand came in to pitch the seventh inning and wrap up the shutout win, needing just six pitches to retire three batters. In five relief appearances this year and almost eight innings pitched, Durand has allowed no runs to score.

  • Brandon Mooney went 2-for-3 with two runs, and one of his hits was a double.

  • Now with a streak of nine consecutive games with multiple hits, Mooney is now in a tie for 10th on Loyola's career hits list. He's the only one in the top 10 to play fewer than four seasons at Loyola.

  • Cole Romero recorded two hits, one of which was a triple, and a team-high 4 RBI. Romero's first triple of the year gives him five in his Wolf Pack tenure, which puts him in a tie for eighth in that category in the Loyola baseball record book.

  • Garrett Felix hit a pair of singles, scored two runs, and drove in two runs. He's had at least two hits in each of the last four games.

  • Loyola totaled 12 hits in Friday's game, and five different Wolf Pack players tallied multiple hits: Mooney, Felix, Romero, Landon Manson, and Landon Trosclair. Manson and Trosclair also hit doubles.

  • Mooney has a team-best hit streak of 13 games, while Romero's hitting streak is 12 games. Both have at least one hit in all but one game this season.
