Wolf Pack pulls off Homecoming win over Mobile

Kameron Johnson had a team-high 24 points to lead Loyola in Thursday’s win

NEW ORLEANS – The Wolf Pack men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with the Southern States Athletic Conference West Division leader on Thursday, pulling out the big win over Mobile, 87-81, in The Den. Loyola will play the second game of its four-game homestand on Saturday, facing No. 17 Dalton State on Feb. 15, at 2 p.m.
 

A layup by Kameron Johnson put the Pack on the board, then jumper by Milan Mejia gave Loyola the lead, 4-3. Mobile got back in front with a score, then Kosta Bjelicic changed the lead once again, 6-5. Johnson and Bjelicic each scored to extend Loyola's advantage to three, 10-7. The Rams took charge in the following minutes, scoring seven straight to get a four-point edge, 14-10. A Leonard Jackson triple, along with free throws by Mejia got the home team within two, 17-15. Brody Adams tied things up, then a record-breaking 3-pointer by Mejia gave the Maroon and Gold a three-point advantage at the midway point of the half, 20-17.
 

Reece Seicshnaydre got on the scoresheet with back-to-back buckets, 24-21. Cameron Williams drained a trey, then a steal by the New Orleans native led to a slam, 29-23. After the visitors cut Loyola's lead down, the Rams tied the game with three minutes until the break, 35-35. Loyola's all-time three-point record holder, Mejia, added another triple to his total, putting the Pack in front, 38-35. The Pack closed the half with scores by Bjelcic and Mejia to go up five, heading into the locker room, 42-37.
 

Troy Thomas scored the Pack's first points after halftime, 44-39. Johnson added a basket with Bjelcic adding another shortly after, 48-45. Johnson continued to score, scoring a layup and adding a trey to put Loyola ahead eight, 55-47. Soon after, Williams got to the rim in back-to-back possessions, 59-51. Brody Adams drained a jumper while the freshman Bjelcic tipped one in to keep the home team in front, 89-81.
 

Johnson hit a jumper, then completed a three-point play with an assist from Jarvis Brown, extending Loyola's lead to double-digit territory, 72-60. The sophomore made one from beyond the arc, bringing his total to over 20 points, 75-62. After Jackson made two at the foul line, Johnson added another two of his own the same way, 79-69. In the remaining minutes, Bjelicic and Williams scored to put the Pack in position to win. Mejia, Johnson and Williams made the final free throws to secure the victory on homecoming night.
 

Pack Facts

  • Milan Mejia has set a new Wolf Pack record in career three-pointers. After knocking down two triples in the first half, Mejia now has 249 threes in his Loyola career, passing Luke Zumo (247) for first all-time. 

  • In Loyola's record book, Mejia is now first in career threes (249) and third in career steals (168). 

  • Kameron Johnson poured in a career-high 24 points while shooting 9-of-16 from the field and 2-of-3 from deep. Johnson also led the game in assists (7) while grabbing seven rebounds and two steals. 

  • Kosta Bjelicic secured his first double-double as a member of the Wolf Pack, posting 16 points and a season-high 11 rebounds. 

  • Cameron Williams matched his most points in a Loyola uniform, scoring 14 to go along with five rebounds and a game-high three steals.
