Baseball pulls away from Spring Hill

The 13th-ranked Wolf Pack scored 10 runs in the seventh inning to force the run rule into effect

WESTWEGO – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team didn't get many runs early in its game against Spring Hill College on Wednesday, but a 10-run seventh inning propelled the Wolf Pack to a 12-2 run-rule win at Segnette Field.

No. 13 Loyola (33-11, 16-8 in SSAC) heads to Tennessee Southern (14-25, 10-14) for a weekend Southern States Athletic Conference series starting Friday.

Spring Hill scored single runs in the first and fifth innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Wolf Pack tied the ballgame in the bottom half of the fifth after out-hitting the Badgers up to that point. Brandon Mooney started the frame with a single, advancing into scoring position via a wild pitch during the next at-bat. Jaxon Buratt delivered the RBI single up the middle, 2-1, but he was later out on the base paths when Landon Manson reached on a fielder's choice. Pinch runner Landon Trosclair eventually moved to third with Collin Zeringue at the plate, and he tied the game, 2-2, with a groundout to second.

Loyola blew the game open in the seventh inning with 10 runs to force the run rule into effect. The first three runs scored on bases-loaded walks with Zeringue, Anthony Fernandez and Kason Cullins at the plate, 5-2. Prescott Marsh picked up two RBI on a single through the right side after that, 7-2, and Marcus Steen delivered a pinch-hit three-run home run to make it a 10-2 lead. Jake Mills, Mooney and Buratt kept the inning going with two singles and a walk during consecutive at-bats, then a fielder's choice that led to Spring Hill's third error scored the two runs, 12-2, to end the game early.

Hunter Ponson and Christian Callender logged two innings each to start the game. Ponson gave up his run on three innings with a strikeout in the first and second innings, then Callender faced just one more than the minimum with a strikeout in the third and fourth. Callender came back out in the fifth and allowed a solo home run before giving way to Thomas Hakimian with two outs. Hakimian pitched the sixth and seventh innings, too, allowing one hit in his 2.1 innings of work on just 17 pitches to earn his second win of the season.
