Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball drops two Friday

The Wolf Pack and Point University started a three-game SSAC series with two games on Friday

WESTWEGO – The Loyola Wolf Pack baseball team suffered their first loss of the season on Friday, dropping both games of a Southern States Athletic Conference doubleheader with Point University, 7-5 and 6-2, at Segnette Field. The series finale between the Wolf Pack (10-2, 3-2 in SSAC) and the Skyhawks (11-3, 3-2) is set for 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Game 1: Point 7, (RV) Loyola 5

Collin Zeringue got the scoring started in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run to right field, but the Skyhawks quickly answered with a two-run homer in the next half inning. Loyola got those runs right back in the bottom of the second, thanks to a two-RBI single by Brandon Mooney. Point, though, tied it again, 4-4, with another two-run home run to right field in the top of the fourth.

Loyola went back ahead, 5-4, in the fifth. Jaxon Buratt got on base via an infield single, then moved to second on a wild pitch and third on a balk. After Zeringue walked to put runners on the corners, a double steal that confused the Point infield allowed the run to come home. The Skyhawks, again, answered, but this time scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 7-5 advantage, which was good enough for the win.

Stephen Still struck out six during his five innings of work. He allowed four runs on six hits, but all four of the runs came on two swings of the bat - the two home runs aided by the hard wind blowing out to right field.

Game 2: Point 6, (RV) Loyola 2

Point University struck first with two runs in the fourth inning and four more in the seventh, as Loyola was held off the board for the first six innings. Zeringue and Jed Cambre led off the bottom of the seventh with a double and a single to put runners on the corners with no outs, then a fielder's choice off the bat of Landon Trosclair brought home Loyola's first run, 6-1.

The Wolf Pack added another run in the next inning, 6-2. Marcus Steen had a pinch-hit double to right-center, then he came home when the Point first baseman couldn't hold on to the ball when tagging Prescott Marsh running to first. Loyola couldn't get any more runs after that, as the Skyhawks held on for the doubleheader sweep.

Brady Bowen pitched 5.2 strong innings with eight strikeouts while allowing two runs off three hits. Point plated four more runs after the Loyola starter exited the game in the sixth.
