Loyola Esports competes in close matches

NEW ORLEANS – The Wolf Pack played in two matches this week with the Smash Bros. team competing in their third match of Sun Conference play against SCAD Savannah and Call of Duty competing against Highland Community College. The Wolf Pack forced their opponents to tie-breaking sets in both matches, falling to SCAD Savannah and Highland Community College, 2-1 and 3-2. 
 

On Feb. 20, the Wolf Pack will battle St. Thomas University (Fla.) in Sun Conference Smash Bros at 7 p.m. Then, the Loyola Call of Duty team will compete on Wednesday night against the University of North Texas at Dallas at 7:30 p.m. The Super Smash Bros. Premier and Plus teams will conclude the week with matches on Thursday, at 6 p.m. against Dallas Baptist University and Talladega College. All of the matches will be streamed at https://www.youtube.com/@loynoesports. The Super Smash Bros. Plus team will livestream their match on the LoynoEsports2 YouTube channel.
 

The Sun Conference Smash Bros. squad began the week with a three-set match against SCAD Savannah. The Bees came away with a 2-1 victory in a close contest. The Wolf Pack began the game with Samuel Spiegal's Roy taking a 3-1 win over SCAD's Joker. Then, Bowser Jr. traded stocks with Spiegal to even the score. Ameer Joseph took care of Bowser Jr.'s last stock, 1-1. Then, SCAD's Luigi took down Joseph, 2-2. Daven-Angelo Montalbano entered the match with Toon Link to take the final stock of Luigi. King Dedede entered the ring for the Bees and eliminated both Montalbano and Makari Jackson to take a one-set lead over the Wolf Pack.
 

To start the second crew battle, SCAD's Joker barely grabbed a victory over Joseph's Bayonetta, 3-2. Then, Montalbano took down Joker to move on to SCAD's second fighter. This time, Luigi got the better of Montalbano, 2-1. Jackson entered the match's second set by eliminating two straight opponents in Luigi and Wii Fit Trainer, 2-1 and 3-1. King Dedede took down Jackson's final stock to send Spiegal's Roy into the fray. With the match hinging on his final stock, Spiegal came away with a 3-2 win over King Dedede to advance the match to a tie-breaking third set.
 

SCAD's Wii Fit Trainer started the final set by winning a toss-up fight with Montalbano's Toon Link, 3-2. Then, Joseph took care of Wii Fit Trainer to bring SCAD's Joker to the fight. Then, Joker got a win over Joseph, 2-1. Jackson's Terry eliminated Joker by taking his final two stocks and keeping two of his own, 2-1. However, King Dedede took down both Jackson and Spiegal to secure the win.
 

The Call of Duty team began Wednesday evening with a hardpoint map. Adeola Apata helped the team secure the first-set victory with 43 kills, leading both teams in that category. HCC took the second map with a win on Search and Destroy. In the third set on a control point map, HCC took another victory to take a 2-1 lead over the Pack. On another Hardpoint map, Loyola took the victory to even the score at 2-2. Gabrielle Jenkins and Wilhelmina Roccaforte-Kostecky combined for 35 kills and 13 assists while Keagan Authement eliminated HCC's final player to secure the set victory. In the match's final set, the Wolf Pack pushed HCC to a tie-breaking 11th round. However, HCC managed to take down Authement with seconds left to defuse the bomb.
