Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Volleyball wins fifth straight

The Wolf Pack volleyball team took down SSAC foe Point University Friday night in The Den

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola Wolf Pack volleyball team made it five straight wins with their sweep of Point University on Friday, and that moves their Southern States Athletic Conference record to 4-4 with five matches left in the regular season. Loyola will next host Life University on Saturday for another league matchup. First serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. in The Den.

Loyola got off to a good start with a 25-22 first-set win. Amaya Bazemore collected a couple of kills with the two teams trading early points, 4-3. That sparked a 6-0 run on Juliet Petruzelli's serve, who served two aces, as Alexa Palmer and Juliana Pacini also took turns finding the floor, 9-3. Attacks by Pacini, Bazemore and Clarissa Dupree kept Loyola in the lead, but the Skyhawks trimmed their deficit to one, 17-16. Two kills from Palmer and a setter dump by Ellie Connor maintained the three-point lead, 23-20, and Bazemore finished things off with two more kills to bring her first-set total to six.

Preslie Boswell, Bazemore and Palmer all had kills in the early going of the second set to make it a tie game, 6-6. Two kills each by Boswell, Bazemore and Dupree powered a 9-3 run to extend the lead to 14-9 for the Wolf Pack, then a service ace by Petruzelli moments later kept it a five-point advantage, 16-11. Connor added an ace, too, and blocks by Natalie Burkholder, Boswell and Pacini put Loyola in command, 22-15. Pacini notched one more attack, and a couple of errors by the visitors made it a 2-0 lead in the match.

Boswell picked up a kill and a block to start the third set to keep momentum on Loyola's side, then a couple of kills by Palmer pushed the score to 7-5. Loyola stayed in front with the help of a few Skyhawk errors, and two kills each by Bazemore and Pacini kept it a two-point lead, 17-15. Back-to-back attacks by Boswell prompted a Point timeout, 21-16, and a kill by Dupree followed by a match-sealing block from Palmer capped off Loyola's win.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Jesse Zabal

"It's so nice to keep this win streak going, and to do it with some really strong volleyball. We continue to settle into who we are as a team and I am so impressed with our mindset going into each new match. Point has some really great pieces and we knew we couldn't allow ourselves to get complacent. We struggled to get going offensively in the first set, but we really ramped it up, minimized our hitting errors and stayed efficient. And we maintained our defensive strengths that we've grown into the past few weeks.

"Win 150 was a fun one and I am so grateful for every player that has been a part of every single one of those. I'm also incredibly grateful for Coach Robbie who has anchored our staff of two for a large majority of those wins. And we definitely wouldn't get by without our Athletic Trainers, Strength & Conditioning coaches, and administrative staff who have supported us every step of the way. These aren't only my wins, they belong to all of the players and staff that helped us earn them, and I'm looking forward to all of us adding a few more to that number this season!"
