Loyola wins road SSAC matchup

The Wolf Pack dominated William Carey on Thursday to improve their SSAC record to 4-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Loyola Wolf Pack volleyball team made the short trip to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, on Thursday, and they defeated the William Carey Crusaders in straight sets (25-17, 25-15, 25-13) to win their fourth Southern States Athletic Conference game of the season.

Loyola (13-4, 4-1 in SSAC) is back in action next Friday, Sept. 29, when it hosts Brewton-Parker in The Den at 6 p.m.

The trio of Juliana Pacini, Alexa Palmer and Emily Sheperis helped the Pack get out to a 9-3 lead in the opening set with their attacks, as Simone Moreau also had a service ace during that stretch. The Crusaders hung around to make it a 10-6 game, but an ace by Simone Tyson and a block by Amaya Bazemore and Preslie Boswell kept Loyola ahead, 13-8. A couple of errors by WCU brought the Loyola lead to 18-12, then Tyson had a kill and an ace to push the advantage to 21-13. Sheperis capped things off with a couple more kills and her second ace of the set to give Loyola a 1-0 lead in the match.

Loyola trailed 10-9 after a back-and-forth start to the second set that saw five different Wolf Pack players record kills. The Wolf Pack, though, won 11 of the next 14 points to take control of the game with a 20-13 lead. Bazemore and Palmer each had three kills during that run, and Pacini and Moreau each had aces. A block by Sheperis and Boswell, two kills by Pacini and an ace by Tyson highlighted the end to Set 2.

The Wolf Pack was able to put the finishing touches on the sweep after a dominant start to the third set. Ellie Connor became the fifth player with an ace, and three kills by Bazemore gave the visitors a 10-3 lead. Carey tried to hang around by bringing the score to 15-9, however, a kill by Tyson and three WCU errors made it an 18-10 lead for the Wolf Pack. Boswell found the floor on an attack, then she combined for a block with Sheperis to keep the momentum on the Wolf Pack's side, 21-13. Tyson finished things with her fourth kill and team-high third ace.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Jesse Zabal

"Midweek road games are always a toss up. Our student athletes have a ton on their plate and to ask them to get on a bus, travel and play within two hours of stepping off the bus can be tough. But our group handled it fantastically tonight.

Our hitting efficiency was through the roof and just goes to show how much work this team is putting in when it comes to details and the mental side of the game. We had three hitters with zero errors - absolutely impressive. We're also continuing to get more aggressive and accurate on the service line.

We will all enjoy having a weekend off and get back to work on Monday. I hope we have a ton of people out next weekend when we're back in The Den. Saturday is Community Day, so we hope to see everyone there as we collect donations for Second Harvest and connect with our New Orleans community."
