Women’s basketball loses in first round

The No. 4-seed Wolf Pack was taken down by No. 13-seed John Brown on Tuesday in the first round of the NAIA National Championship tournament

NEW ORLEANS  – The fourth-seeded Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team had a chance to win or send the game to overtime against the No. 13-seed John Brown (Ark.), but the Golden Eagles ultimately held on for the upset 68-65 first-round win in the NAIA National Championship tournament on Tuesday.

Loyola's season comes to an end with a 27-3 overall.

In the first quarter, Sandra Cannady started the game off with a score, taking a 2-0 lead. Free throws from Sydni Tangle and Jazmene McMillan, along with another Cannady jumper put the lead at 7-2. However, JBU fought back, tying the game up at 7-7 with under six minutes left in the quarter. A Cannady 3 put the score at 12-8 before the Golden Eagles took their first lead of the game with 1:22 left on the clock, 13-12.

John Brown extended their lead in the second quarter, taking a 23-16 lead with six minutes until halftime. Shooting 9-for-10 from the field, the Golden Eagles were tough to stop, taking a 26-17 lead with 4:22 until halftime. With four minutes left, a pair of Cannady free throws put the JBU lead at seven, but the Golden Eagles capitalized on their shooting. Again, Cannady made another pair of free throws, but that would be the last Loyola score of the first half with JBU scoring in the final seconds, 33-21.

The Golden Eagles began the second half with a 3, but Taylor Thomas quickly responded with a score. McMillan responded to a JBU jumper with a triple, then Sandra Cannady hit a jumper of her own to make the score 38-28. A free throw from McMillan and a trey from Thomas put the Golden Eagle lead at six. With under seven minutes left, Cannady stole the ball and put in a layup to make the score 38-34.

After a timeout, Thomas made it a one-score game, but JBU responded to make their lead to six with 4:41 left in the third quarter, and once again, Cannady sunk a triple to cut the lead to 42-39. The Golden Eagles found their stride and continued to score, putting the score at 52-41 with under a minute left in the third quarter. To end the quarter, Tera Snell scored off a pass from Taylor Thomas to cut the lead to 52-43.

Starting the fourth quarter, Thomas drained a 3 to make the score 52-46. The Pack kept scoring but the Golden Eagles continued to respond, keeping a lead with 5:42 on the clock. On the next possession, Thomas hit another triple to cut the lead to six, 61-55. Once again, Thomas scored a 3 to cut the lead to 61-58 with five minutes remaining. Cannady scored again to cut the lead to one with four minutes on the clock. A Tay Cannon jumper kept the JBU lead at 64-63 with over three minutes left.
