Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

No. 14 Pack drops double-overtime contest at Stillman

The Loyola men’s basketball team fought Thursday’s matchup into double overtime, but the Stillman Tigers prevailed in a road SSAC matchup for the Wolf Pack

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The 14th-ranked Loyola Wolf Pack suffered a tough road Southern States Athletic Conference loss on Thursday, losing 103-95 in double overtime to the Stillman College Tigers. The Pack is now 19-5 overall and 14-3 in league play, leading the standings by one game and a tiebreaker over second-place Faulkner.

Loyola will now travel to Blue Mountain Christian on Saturday, tipping off at 2 p.m. in the team's last regular-season road game.

Both teams shot 50 percent from the floor in the first half to bring the score to 42-41, Loyola, at the break. Both teams shot well from beyond the arc, too, as Loyola went 4-for-7 compared to the Tigers' 7-for-13.

Jalen Galloway got the game going with a 3-pointer in the opening minute, but Stillman answered with its first 3 immediately after. Galloway hit three free throws over the next couple of minutes to keep the game tied, 8-8, then he got his 10th point at the midway point of the first half to tie the game once again, 20-20.

Leonard Jackson hit a 3-pointer a couple of minutes later, 25-22, and Milan Mejia added one near the end of the first 20 minutes to give the Pack a 38-37 lead. In between those two 3s, Alex Hammond, Zach Muller and Cameron Williams each got their first field goals of the game as well. The Tigers briefly took the lead, 39-38, but two Galloway free throws and another score by Williams gave Loyola the one-point lead at halftime.

Galloway helped keep pace with Stillman in the early going of the second half, scoring Loyola's first six points to tie the game, 48-48, through three minutes. After that, it was Michael Harden's turn to get hot, scoring six points for Loyola to keep his team within two of the Tigers, but two 3s by the hosts made it 64-59 with 12 minutes to play.

Mejia got the score down to three near the 10-minute mark, but five more Stillman points, including another 3, made it a 71-63 lead a minute later. Mejia got a 3-pointer to fall and four straight points by Hammond cut it to 76-72, forcing Stillman to call a timeout with 5:57 on the clock. Mejia and Galloway combined for the following nine points to keep things close, 84-81, in the final two minutes, then a Matthew Mondesir old-fashioned 3-point play tied it in the final minute. However, a last-second shot fell short for the Wolf Pack, forcing the game to overtime.

The Tigers came out in the extra period and scored the first six points, but a 3-pointer by Harden brought it to a one-score game again, 90-87, with two minutes remaining. Harden hit another big 3 to tie it, but neither team could make its last attempt before going to a second overtime.

The two teams both made a pair of free throws to start, however, eight consecutive for the Tigers gave them the 100-92 lead in the final minute. Harden did make another 3 in the last few seconds, but Stillman was able to hold on for the win.
