NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team secured the second seed at next week's Southern States Athletic Conference Championship by defeating William Carey in straight sets (25-16, 25-20, 25-18) on Saturday. The Wolf Pack ends the regular season 23-5 overall and 13-2 in league play, marking the third straight season with at least 23 wins.Â
Â
Loyola also celebrated its four seniors: Amaya Bazemore, Emily Sheperis, Simone Tyson and Samantha Ingram prior to the game.Â
Â
Ellie Connor got things started with a service ace, and Juliana Pacini and Bazemore quickly made it a 4-1 lead with back-to-back kills. William Carey called an early timeout after Alexa Palmer recorded her first kill, 6-1, and the Pack eventually pushed that lead to 8-1 when WCU committed two more attacking errors. Sheperis notched two kills to extend the score to 13-6, as the Crusaders were never a threat in the opening set. Loyola ran away thanks to three more attacks from Pacini and two more from Bazemore.Â
Â
William Carey played better in the second set, even holding the lead for most it until Loyola tied it at 16-16. From that point on, the Wolf Pack traded leads with the Crusaders until the score tied at 20-20 with Preslie Boswell finding the floor. Then, the Wolf Pack scored five straight points, including kills from Pacini and Bazemore, along with a Connor ace to prevail in the second set.
Â
In the third set, William Carey took a lead to start. The Crusaders maintained their lead up until the Pack tied things up at 12-12 with a Tyson kill. With Ingram serving, the Wolf Pack went on a 9-2 run that included five kills from Sheperis and an Ingram ace. After a William Carey timeout, the Wolf Pack closed it out with Tyson collecting the final kill to seal the victory on Senior Day.
Â
"Today was a great way to close out our regular season. I am so incredibly proud of our four seniors and all they've done to move this program forward. It has been such an honor to see them grow this season and in their time here at Loyola. I'm really impressed by how efficient we've been all year on our attack. It's something that we've struggled with since I started and this year has been a big turnaround. And Coach Robbie has done a phenomenal job with our blockers. The work these young women have done in those areas has landed them 16th in hitting percentage and blocks per set in the nation.
Â
Now, we'll quickly turn our attention to the conference tournament. I know this team is fired up and ready to fight and compete for a tournament title. They have wanted growth and success from day one and they continue to push each other & prove themselves each week. We're excited and grateful to have more opportunities to play and coach this game we love."
