Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s basketball home winning streak snapped on Saturday

The Loyola men’s basketball team had won the last 23 games at home prior to Saturday’s loss to the Rams

NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball team suffered a tough Southern States Athletic Conference loss on Saturday, losing to the Mobile Rams 80-77 in The Den. The loss snapped an incredible 23-game home winning streak for the Wolf Pack men's basketball program, but the team is still 17-4 overall and 12-2 in league play and holding the top spot in the league standings by one game over second-place Faulkner.

Loyola and Faulkner meet one more time in the regular season next Thursday, too. Tip-off for that contest is set for 7:30 p.m.

Mobile got off to a 6-2 start, eventually pushing its lead to 14-4 in the first four and a half minutes, but two scores by Jalen Galloway and a 3-pointer by Milan Mejia kept things manageable, 17-11, near the 13-minute mark. Michael Harden and Matthew Mondesir each scored to cut the deficit to five 20-15, and Bradley Alcime did the same thing, 22-17, a couple of minutes later.

Another score by Alcime and a 3-pointer from Zach Muller brought the Pack to within three, 26-23, with eight-plus minutes left until halftime, and Leonard Jackson got his team to be down by one, during the possession. However, the Rams closed the first half on a 16-8 run to take a 42-33 advantage into the break.

Harden got the Pack off to a good start in the second half with two 3s in the first 90 seconds, then buckets by Galloway and Alex Hammond kept Loyola in striking distance, 47-43, with more than 16 minutes left in the game. Mobile answered everything Loyola did, though, eventually making it an 11-point lead, 56-45, with 13 minutes to go.

A quick 9-2 Loyola run made it a 58-54 game, but the Rams answered with the next six points, 64-54, with less than eight minutes on the clock. Trailing 69-63 with less than five minutes left, Harden, Muller and Mejia all scored to cut it to two, 71-69, then Mondesir kept it at two, 73-71 with a big made shot at the 1:57 mark. Mobile got a 3-pointer to extend its lead back out to two possessions, and like how most of the game went, Mobile answered everything Loyola did to hold on to the win.
