COCHRAN, Ga. – The No. 9 Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team rebounded from Thursday's loss with an 81-60 win over Middle Georgia State on Saturday. The Wolf Pack is now 17-1 overall and 10-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference play, sitting one and a half games ahead of second-place Faulkner.Â
Â
Loyola is set for another road trip before returning to The Den next Saturday against Mobile, taking on William Carey in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday.Â
Â
It was a low-scoring start for both teams, as the score remained tied at 4-4 after five minutes of play with scores by Sandra Cannady and Jazmene McMillan. Then, McMillan, Liz Critton and Cannady each had two points to take a 10-9 lead three minutes later. The two teams traded the lead three more times before MGA took a 14-13 heading into the second quarter.Â
Â
The start to the second quarter was much better for the Wolf Pack. They used two 3-pointers from Kate Petrovic and Sydni Tangle to jump ahead 22-16. Taylor Thomas, who made two 3s, and Tay Cannon each scored to help start the frame on an 18-2 run to extend the advantage to 32-16 midway through the frame. Tangle hit one more 3-pointer - her third of the quarter - to help give the Wolf Pack a 35-21 at the break.Â
Â
Middle Georgia clawed its way back into the game in the third quarter, trimming Loyola's lead to 52-49 by the end of the 10 minutes. Another 3 by Thomas kept Loyola ahead, 43-32, at the 6:29 mark, and that was followed by a 3 from Kennedy Hansberry, 46-33. However, MGA outscored the Wolf Pack 16-6 in the final six minutes.Â
Â
McMillan, Hansberry and Cannon scored the first five points of the fourth by either team, 57-49, then a score by Tera Snell and a 3 from McMillan put the Pack ahead 62-53 with seven-plus to go in the contest. Tangle scored her 16th point moments later, and after three made Loyola free throws, she hit another 3-pointer to push the score to 70-56. After a 3 from Cannady and a score by McMillan, Tangle finished things off with her 21st point, which is a new career-high for the senior. Â
