MOUNT VERNON, Ga. – The Loyola Wolf Pack women's basketball team suffered their first loss of the season on Thursday, losing an overtime contest at Brewton-Parker College, 74-69. The defeat moves the No. 9 Wolf Pack to 16-1 overall this season and 9-1 in Southern States Athletics Conference play, holding a one-game lead and the tiebreaker over second-place Faulkner.Â
Â
Loyola will travel to Middle Georgia State (5-9, 3-7 in SSAC) on Saturday for an 11 a.m. CST matchup.Â
Â
After starting the game with a 6-2 lead in the Wolf Pack's favor, Brewton-Parker outscored Loyola 19-8 the rest of the way to bring the score to 21-14 after the first 10 minutes of play. Loyola and BPC played a closer second quarter, but the hosts were still able to gain a little bit more ground on the Pack, winning the frame 18-16 to move the score to 39-30 at the break.Â
Â
The Pack, however, didn't go down quietly. They won the second half 31-22 to force an extra period, and it all started in the third quarter. Taylor Thomas and Jazmene McMillan combined to score the first five points for either team to open the third quarter, 39-35, then after the Lady Barons pushed their advantage back out to 10, 46-36, Kennedy Hansberry and McMillan sparked a 9-0 run to cut the lead to 47-45 with 90 seconds left in the frame. Brewton-Parker would end Loyola's run to take a 49-45 lead into the final 10 minutes.Â
Â
A 3-pointer by Sydni Tangle and another score from McMillan gave Loyola its first lead since the first quarter, 50-49, but BPC quickly regained the lead moments later. Tangle tied the game a few minutes later, 53-53, then McMillan brought the game to another tie, 56-56, near the five-minute mark before Tangle put the Pack back ahead with another 3. Brewton-Parker ended up hitting a 3-pointer with one minute to play, 60-59, eventually taking a two-point lead after one made free throw, but McMillan sent the game to overtime with the game-tying basket with 12 seconds on the clock.Â
Â
In the extra period, BPC scored the first eight points, 69-61, in two and a half minutes to grab the momentum. Free throws by Sandra Cannady and Hansberry made it a four-point game, 69-65, but the Lady Barons iced the game with five made shots from the charity stripe down the stretch.Â
