STERLINGTON, La. – The No. 12 Loyola Wolf Pack split their two games at the Cajun Collision for the second consecutive on Saturday, starting the day with a 9-8 loss to No. 3 Southeastern before beating Jarvis Christian, 5-2. After being on the road the last two weekends, the Wolf Pack (7-4) will return to Segnette Field next Saturday and Sunday for three games against Texas Wesleyan.
#3 Southeastern 9, #12 Loyola 8
The story of the game was the long-ball, as the two teams combined for six home runs throughout the seven-inning contest. The scoring started in the second inning, as Tucker Ganley got things started with a one-out single before Gabriel Trastoy was hit by a pitch. The two advanced a base thanks to a wild pitch, then the next two batters, Christopher Bohrer and Allen Dennis made it a 3-0 game after a ground out and a two-run home run, respectively.
The Fire pushed one run across in the bottom of the second, but Loyola went up 5-1 in the third after back-to-back home runs by Ross Selvaggi and Kason Cullins. However, Southeastern also got consecutive home runs in the bottom half of the frame, with one being a three-run homer, to tie the game at 5-5. Loyola regained the advantage in the top of the fourth, though. Bohrer led off the frame with a double, and that was followed by Dennis' second home run of the game, 7-5.
Southeastern fought back again, scoring four runs off four hits in the bottom of the fifth to take its first lead of the game, 9-7. Loyola tried to mount a comeback in the seventh inning, as Garrett Beadle walked with one out to put the tying run at the plate. Pinch-hitter Luke Clement made it a one-run game with a two-out single two at-bats later, but Southeastern recorded a strikeout to end the game.
After Southeastern scored it nine runs, Reid Perkins and Wes Anderson combined to allow just one hit over the last 1.2 innings, each notching a strikeout as well.
#12 Loyola 5, Jarvis Christian 2
Jarvis Christian got on the board first with a run each in the first and fourth innings, but the Wolf Pack answered with all of their runs in the final three frames. It started in the top of the fifth when Cameron Trosclair led off the frame with a double, and he scored two batters later after back-to-back groundouts. With two outs, Tucker Ganley and Trastoy got another rally going with consecutive singles, then the pair scored off the bat of Tyler Hopkins during the next at-bat to give Loyola a 3-2 lead.
The Pack added their fourth run in the next inning when Dennis led off with a walk. He then stole second to get into scoring position, coming home two batters later on a sacrifice fly. Another run was scored for Loyola in the seventh inning, as Trastoy, who reached base on an infield error, scored when Garrett Beadle singled to left field.
The Pack used five pitchers in the game, but Luke Clement earned the win with three innings in relief. He allowed just one hit while striking out six during his outing to help Loyola hold on for the win.
