NEW ORLEANS – The Loyola University New Orleans men's basketball team continued its dominance against Southern States Athletic Conference competition, winning its 23rd straight contest against its league foes on Monday in The Den. The Wolf Pack beat Brewton-Parker College, 83-74, to improve their overall record to 11-2 and 6-0 in the conference.
Loyola is currently atop the SSAC standings by two games over No. 8 Faulkner, Life and Stillman, which are all 4-2.
It was Brewton-Parker that started with the early momentum, jumping out to a 12-6 lead through the first six minutes of the contest. Milan Mejia ended a four-and-a-half-minute scoring drought with a 3-pointer, 12-9, but the Barons were able to push it back out to 20-11 a couple of minutes later.
Loyola, however, responded with a 24-11 run in an eight-minute span to take a 35-31 lead with less than four minutes remaining in the half. The run started and ended with two free throws from Matthew Mondesir, and Alex Hammond and Mejia followed up Mondesir's first set of free throws with back-to-back scores, 20-17. Muller scored after a couple of BPC made shots, 25-19, then Jalen Galloway converted an old-fashioned 3-point play to make it a three-point ballgame with eight-plus minutes until halftime. Hammond had eight points during that run, and he found the bottom of the net on consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to 27-26, and the fourth made shot of the run came before Mejia's go-ahead 3-pointer, 33-31, at the 3:42-mark.
Galloway scored twice and Hammond added his 10th point to help give the Wolf Pack the 42-36 lead at the break.
Things were looking grim for the Wolf Pack in the early portion of the second half, as the Barons forced four Wolf Pack turnovers while going on a 16-5 run to take a 52-47 lead seven minutes into the half. Bradley Alcime ended the drought and Mondesir hit a big-time 3-pointer to tie the game at 52-52 a couple of minutes later. Hammond would eventually give Loyola the two-point lead after a pair of free throws, although Brewton-Parker would regain the advantage and push ahead 63-56 with seven-plus minutes left in the game.
At that point, it was Loyola's turn to use a scoring run to grab control of the game. Mondesir and Galloway scored, then two free throws by Zach Muller cut the deficit to 66-62. Jackson made it a one-possession game with a reverse layup during Loyola's next trip down the floor, and Mejia drilled a 3-pointer moments later to tie it, 67-67, with 3:18 on the clock. That finished off an 11-4 Wolf Pack run, and after BPC made two free throws to briefly jump back ahead, Mondesir scored six straight to put Loyola ahead by four, 73-69.
Jackson finished things off with six points down the stretch, as well as two free throws each by Mondesir and Mejia to close out the win.
