NEW ORLEANS – There's no place like home for the No. 17 Loyola Wolf Pack. It's been more than 20 months since the Wolf Pack women's basketball team has played a true home game in The Den, and they turned in a dominant effort on Thursday against Southern University at New Orleans, 111-61, in their return.
The Pack (3-0) is next scheduled to travel across town to Dillard University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m.
After SUNO got the game's first three points, Loyola scored the next 20 to take a commanding 20-3 lead. Kennedy Hansberry answered the Knights 3-pointer with one of her own in the first two minutes of the game, then Jazmene McMillan hit one, too, to quickly give the Pack the lead. Liz Critton scored and Taylor Thomas made a free throw before another McMillan 3-pointer, 12-3. Critton got on the board again after that, and Thomas hit one from beyond the arc moments later, 18-3. Critton capped off the long run with her fifth and sixth point, as Loyola jumped up 35-9 after the first quarter.
Kate Petrovic kept the scoring going with a 3-pointer in the first 30 seconds of the second quarter, then MG Lymon made her first 3 a minute later, 42-11. The scoring slowed a little in the middle of the frame, but Morgan Hervey got on the board and Critton scored again to extend the lead to 46-17 at the halfway point of the quarter. Jada Farrell, Sandra Cannady and McMillan each made free throws down the stretch to take a 55-24 lead into the locker room.
McMillan was all over the place to start the second half, scoring nine points and collecting three steals in the first three minutes. By that point, Loyola held a 42-point lead, 68-26. Cannady, who notched a double-double in just 11 minutes, scored back-to-back buckets, 72-30, then McMillan had another steal-and-score to make it a 44-point margin with more than four minutes left in the quarter. Sydni Tangle made it 11 players with points, as Loyola took an 88-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Four different Loyola players scored in the first two and a half minutes of the fourth quarter, making it a 96-49 game, and Jada Washington became the 12th Wolf Pack player to score at the halfway point of the fourth quarter to push Loyola into triple digits, 101-49.
