The Loyola bats came alive to fuel a game-one victory before the Pack fell in game two
WESTWEGO, La. – Sparked by an 11-run output in game one, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team picked up a victory 11-10 over LSU-Alexandria, before falling in game two of the day 6-1 Tuesday afternoon at Segnette Field.
While the visiting Generals (24-15) jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a pair of runs in the first two innings, the Wolf Pack (17-26) would tie the game in the third. After Zachary Cook led the bottom of the frame off with a single up the middle, Brandon Wilson Jr. brought the sophomore in to score on a sac-fly to left. Singles from Allen Dennis and Michael Toscano plated two more runs, with Dennis tying the game at four on a wild pitch.
Loyola kept their foot on the gas in the next inning, as Charlie Seiter reached on a leadoff walk and came in to score on a single to shallow right field by Patrick Chen See. A passed ball from the LSU-Alexandria catcher would allow Chen See to eventually score, with Zachary Cook reaching on a walk of his own and running across home plate off of a sac-fly from Jase Biehl.
Trailing 8-7 in the bottom of the sixth inning, Gabriel Trastoy slapped a double to left-center field before his pinch runner, Luke LaCoste, came in to tie the game on a Jesse Jordan sac-fly. The Wolf Pack would trail once more in the seventh and final inning after the visitors plated a pair of runs, but Michael Toscano and Chen See led off the bottom of the frame with a pair of singles. A bases loaded walk drawn by Trastoy brought the first run in to make it a 10-9 game, with the Pack tying it at 10 on yet another free pass, this time by Biehl. Loyola would earn the victory on their third drawn walk of the inning with runners at each base, this time by Jordan, to win their 17th game of the year.
In game two, the Generals would step out in front 1-0 before Nathan Law came in to score on a fly out from Toscano in the fourth inning. The two teams remained even at one-each until the seventh inning, when the visitors plated five to bring the score to its eventual final, 6-1, in favor of LSU-Alexandria.
Up next, the Wolf Pack will play in their final weekend series at home, hosting Stillman College for three games, beginning Friday, April 12 at 6 p.m.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"Game one was a slugfest, fortunately we got to bat last. I was proud of the guys for competing. LSUA took the lead from us with hits, but we came back and got the win, so I'm proud of them for that. That's a good team we played against, and they're used to winning. For us to get a win against a good team right now really helps our confidence."
"Game two was more of a pitcher's duel. Larry threw really well for us, and Kyle threw well. I tried to extend him a little bit, that's more than he's gone since he's been here, but give LSUA the credit for getting the big hits they had to get. Their pitchers did a much better job in game two against us, limiting us to three hits. It's hard to win a middle-of-the-week game with just three hits."
"But all in all, it was a positive day, we competed against a good team and went 1-1. We're looking forward to the home conference series this weekend."
