Loyola will close out the 2019 regular season tomorrow at 1 p.m.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – To begin their final series of 2019, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team fell 5-4 in game one and 7-1 in game two of a doubleheader at William Carey Friday evening at Milton Wheeler Field.
The first game of the day was a close one, but the Crusaders (22-24, 14-11 SSAC) took an early lead, 3-0 through two innings. In the fourth inning, the Wolf Pack (21-32, 3-23 SSAC) got things going offensively with a leadoff double by Jase Biehl. After Charlie Seiter reached on a hit-by-pitch, Luke LaCoste loaded the bases by reaching first on a bunt-single. Cole Nalesnik brought the first run in for Loyola on an RBI-walk, before Jesse Jordan singled to right field, plating two more for the Pack. Brandon Wilson Jr. gave the Wolf Pack a 4-3 lead on a single into centerfield.
In the bottom of the same frame the home team evened the score up at four, which would hold though seven innings to send it into extras. However, William Carey would score the game-winner in the bottom of the ninth to claim a 5-4 victory.
The home team would jump out to a lead early in game two, scoring two runs in the second inning, before plating five more in the bottom of the fifth. Loyola would score one run in the top of the following inning, but was unable to catch up, dropping the seven-inning contest 7-1.
Loyola will face William Carey tomorrow in their regular-season finale at 1 p.m.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"Mickey really battled on the mound in game one. We had some big at bats offensively, tied the game, and had a chance to win it, but just couldn't get one more big hit. I'm really proud of the effort in both games. Being where we're at right now in the standings, for them to show up and play two solid games was great. Hopefully we can play with the same effort tomorrow and win our last game of the year."
