The sophomore dominated the competition in a nine-inning complete game in which he held the Tigers to one run and struck out seven
WESTWEGO, La. – The Loyola University New Orleans baseball team began their final weekend series of the year with a win, defeating Stillman College 3-1 Friday night at Segnette Field.
The Wolf Pack (18-26, 2-17 SSAC) were first to enter the run column, plating a pair of runs in the second inning. After Jesse Jordan reached base on a hit-by-pitch, he advanced to second on a bunt single from Luke LaCoste before moving up to third on a double steal. The senior would score the first run of the game on an error by the Tigers' (8-23, 1-18 SSAC) third baseman, before LaCoste came across home on yet another error at the hot corner.
In the fifth, Jase Biehl drew a leadoff walk and would advance to second after a bunt-single by Nathan Law. A wild pitch would allow each runner to move up 90 feet before Brandon Wilson Jr. sent a fly-ball out to left field to drive in Biehl and make it a 3-0 game.
Making his eighth start on the mound for Loyola, Michael Toscano was dominant, holding Stillman to just five hits while tossing his first career complete game. The sophomore allowed just one run through his nine frames of work and struck out a career best seven batters to earn his third win on the season.
The Wolf Pack and Tigers will finish up their weekend series tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. at Segnette Field.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"Mickey Toscano was outstanding on the mound for us tonight. He just guts it out and gets through tough spots because he's a competitor. He kept throwing strikes and making good pitches and really kept them off guard the whole night, and we needed it because their pitcher totally handcuffed us as well, he was good."
"I thought we played really well defensively behind Mickey as well. Zach made some really nice plays as well as Brandon, Allen did a great job on first base, and Gabe threw guys out trying to advance twice. All in all, our pitching and defense was really good tonight. You have to be able to do that to face a pitcher like we faced. So I was proud of the guys and I told them, we got a win today so let's try to get two tomorrow."
