The Wildcats take an early lead on Loyola, with the Pack's comeback attempt falling just short
WESTWEGO, La. – In the final game of their weekend series, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team fell 5-3 to the Bethel Wildcats Saturday afternoon at Segnette Field.
After keeping the visitors off the board for the first three frames, the Wildcats (12-8, 3-3 SSAC) struck first with three runs in the top of the fourth inning. While they would add another run in the seventh to make it a 4-0 game, the Wolf Pack (11-12, 0-6 SSAC) came alive in the bottom of the inning.
Back-to-back singles from Michael Toscano and Jase Biehl led the Wolf Pack off before a balk from the Bethel pitcher and single by Charlie Seiter brought each runner across home plate. With two outs in the inning and Seiter on second, Nathan Law slapped a ball up the middle of the infield to make it a one-run game.
While neither team could plate a run in the eighth, the visiting Wildcats added one last run in the ninth inning and the Wolf Pack were unable to respond, leading to a final tally of 5-3.
Loyola will take the week off but return to action at home next Friday, March 15 with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. against Brewton-Parker.
Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust
"We pitched much better today. Wyatt had a good outing for us, especially pitching on short rest since he threw Monday. He had one mistake, the two-run homer to their best hitter. Then Alex did a great job keeping us in it during his four innings. I thought we swung the bats okay, we just couldn't put anything together. We had one inning where we tied some hits together, but besides that, I don't think we had any other inning with multiple base runners. I'm proud of our effort, showing up 12 hours after losing a doubleheader the way we did last night to give us a fighting chance at the end. We just have to keep getting better, we have another home series next weekend, and we hope to win a series next weekend."
