Loyola Drops First Two Matches at UST Labor Day Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

The Pack continue play at the tournament on Sunday with two more matches, starting with Fisk University at 11 a.m.

HOUSTON – The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team dropped two 3-1 results on the first day of the University of St. Thomas Labor Day Tournament in Houston.

In game one of the day the Wolf Pack (3-3) took on Friends University in a tightly contested match. In set number one, Loyola trailed 19-12 before scoring nine of the next 13 to make it  23-21. However, the Pack would fall by a score of 25-23, the same score they would drop in set two. While Loyola would take the third set in yet another tight one 25-22, they would ultimately drop set four 25-18 to fall 3-1 in game one at the UST Labor Day Tournament.

The second match of the day came against Huston-Tillotson, a team the Pack faced off against last Friday in New Orleans. While their first meeting of the season was a 3-0 decision in favor of the Rams, the Wolf Pack played a much closer match on Saturday. Dropping the first two sets 25-16 and 25-23, Loyola rallied back to take the third set 25-20. However, similar to the first game's ending, the Pack would drop the fourth set 25-18 for a 3-1 final score.

The Wolf Pack continue play at the UST Labor Day Tournament on Sunday, taking on Fisk University at 11 a.m. and closing the day with a 7 p.m. match against host University of St. Thomas.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Jesse Zabal

"It was a rough day for us. Unfortunately, we had some some hotel issues Friday night, only got about five hours of sleep, and turned around to be at the gym at 7:30 a.m. We really believe if we had been fully rested, our performance would've landed on the more positive side. We played some strong teams today and saw moments of greatness, but couldn't string together enough points to win the sets we needed."

"Tylar Beckham was strong at the net for us in the first match of the day with 11 kills and three blocks. Maddie Huekels had a great day, with triple-doubles in both matches today. We're looking forward to getting some rest tonight in preparation for tomorrow with matches against Fisk and UST."
