Playing in their first two of four games at the tournament, Loyola opened the season with a win before dropping game two

NEW ORLEANS – Opening the 2018 regular season with two games at the Dillard Classic, the Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team defeated Talladega 3-0 before falling to Huston-Tillotson 0-3 Friday afternoon.

In the season opener for the Wolf Pack (1-1) against Talladega College, Loyola came out trailing early, taking their first time out after trailing 7-13 in set number one. The Pack bounced back however, tying it up at 18-all before coming out on top 25-23.

Set two began similar to the first, with Loyola trailing early 1-5 before drawing it even at 6-6, forcing a Talladega timeout. Taking eight of the next 10 points, the Pack went out in front 14-8, winning set two by 10, 25-15. In set number three, the Wolf Pack rolled on, jumping out 10-5 before eventually closing out the 3-0 sweep with a 25-14 win in set three.

To open up game two of the day, the Wolf Pack fell behind early in the first set against Huston-Tillotson 14-19, before climbing back to a 24-24 tie. After the two teams traded points the Rams claimed the final two, taking the first set 27-25.

The Pack would fall behind early in both the second and third sets, conceding game two 3-0.

Loyola will open up day two of the Dillard Classic with a 9 a.m. match against Jarvis Christian College Saturday morning, before facing the host Dillard later in the day at 5 p.m.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Jesse Zabal

"Today was a great start to our season. A lot of our freshman saw playing time today and got some experience to carry with them as we progress through the season. Freshman Gabriella Martinez came out and played two really solid matches for us at middle, a position she had only been practicing this past week. Sophomore Helene Masone also had two strong performances today."

"We asked a lot of this group today as we played without four starters who were suspended for violating team policies. With a mostly freshman group out there, Coach PItre and I are excited about their effort, as well as what they will bring to this program during their time at Loyola. We are looking forward to competing again tomorrow!"
