Pack Fall To Top-Seeded Faulkner 14-6 To Open SSAC Tournament

In a high-scoring round one contest at the conference championships, the Pack fall to No. 1 Faulkner

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - In the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Baseball Championships, the Loyola University New Orleans baseball team dropped their opening round matchup with Faulkner 14-6 Wednesday night at Paterson Field.

Pitchers for both teams kept the bats quiet for innings one and two before the Wolf Pack (24-30) took a 3-0 lead in the third. Brandon Wilson Jr. started the inning off with a bunt single before making it to third base and eventually scoring on a single up the middle from Zachary Cook. After Charlie Seiter reached base when he was hit by a pitch, Payton Alexander drove in both Cook and Seiter on a double to left field.

The Eagles (48-6) plated one run in the bottom of the inning before in the fourth, Loyola scored two more on a triple from Cook that scored Spencer Rosenbohm and Rawlings Elam. With the Pack up 5-1, Faulkner climbed back with five runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth inning.

The top-ranked team in the country would later add one more run in the sixth, before tacking on seven more in the bottom of the seventh. While the Wolf Pack added one more run, they would eventually fall 14-6.

A double elimination tournament, Loyola will take on Bethel tomorrow, May 3rd at 1 p.m.

Wolf Pack Head Coach Doug Faust

"I'm proud of the effort from our guys, we showed up tonight and intended on winning the game. We were playing the best team in the country and came out swinging the bats well, Jason started out really well and we played well defensively."

"It was only a matter of time before they scored, and they're good, that's why they're the number one team in the country. They can pitch, hit and play defense."

"Eventually we made a couple of mistakes. I told the guys I was really proud of their effort and attitude, how they showed up tonight. We just need to go out tomorrow with the same mindset tomorrow and try to win our game at 1 p.m."
