Box Score Loyola falls by five for their first loss in the past nine games
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - After leading for a majority of the game, the Loyola University New Orleans women's basketball team fell just short in a tight matchup with Faulkner University 60-55 Saturday afternoon at Tine W. Davis Gymnasium.
The Eagles (22-5, 9-5) took a quick 5-0 lead to begin the game, before threes by Megan Worry and Paige Franckiewicz quickly put the Wolf Pack (20-5, 11-2) up one 6-5. With just under four minutes remaining in the first quarter, Zoie Miller connected on a three pointer, before An'Jolique Woodson scored a last-second bucket to make it 13-8 Loyola at the end of the first.
Faulkner scored a quick basket to begin the second period, but Miller responded with a bucket of her own. After Breyah Richardson was sent to the line and hit two free throws, Loyola jumped out to a six-point lead 19-13. The home team, climbed back however, tying the game at 19-all with just under five minutes left in the half.
A three by Worry followed by a quick score from Kaila Anthony on the following possession for Loyola put the Pack up by five. Faulkner connected on one free throw to close out the second quarter, setting the halftime score at 26-22 Wolf Pack.
To open play in the third quarter, Anthony collected two quick points before Miller hit a deep ball to put Loyola up 31-22. The Pack eventually climbed out to their largest lead of the game, 12, after Miller found Franckiewicz outside for three. The Eagles slid back into the game however, cutting the Loyola lead to five and setting the score at the end of the third to 45-40.
Two quick field goals by Faulkner, followed by a three pointer gave them the lead 47-45 with just over seven minutes remaining, before eventually taking a 55-46 lead at four minutes on the clock. While the Wolf Pack fought for the late come back, bringing it within four at 37 seconds left to play, they would eventually fall by a score of 60-55 for only their second SSAC loss on the season.
Miller and Franckiewicz led the Pack in scoring with 12 points each, while Di'Mond Jackson led the team in rebounding with 12.
Faulkner was led by Chelsea Burt who collected 15 points, while Brandy Alley grabbed a team-best 10 boards.
The Wolf Pack will head back home for their final week of the regular season, hosting William Carey on Thursday, February 22nd at 5:30 p.m., before taking on Blue Mountain College in their season finale Saturday, February 24th at 2 p.m.
