Box Score The seventh-seeded Wolf Pack continues pool play tomorrow with matches against second-seeded William Carey and sixth-seeded Middle Georgia.
The Loyola University New Orleans volleyball team traveled to Montgomery, Ala. for the SSAC Volleyball Championship which began on Thursday. The Wolf Pack entered as the seventh seed, taking on third-seeded Martin Methodist on the first day of the conference tournament.
After going 1-1 against Martin Methodist in the regular season, Loyola completed the 3-0 upset with a strong defensive performance that included 10 blocks and just a 0.098 hitting percentage for the RedHawks.
The first set was the closest all the way through, with neither team holding more than a two-point lead until the end of the frame, where the Wolf Pack pulled ahead for the 25-22 first set win.
The second set was similarly close, with the RedHawks holding the lead for most of the set, even as late as when they led 23-20. But Loyola closed out with a 6-1 run to take the set with a score of 26-24.
Loyola then closed out the match in convincing fashion, taking the third and final set by a score of 25-11 after a 12-1 run to end the match and seal the victory.
Beatriz Agosto (SO/Miami, Fla.) led the Wolf Pack with 11 kills, with Tylar Beckham (SO/New Orleans, La.) not far behind at 10 kills. Allison Hartmann (JR/Slidell, La.) hit seven kills, while Adelia Obioha, Malea Howie (SO/Greenwood, Ind.), and Lindsay Ulfig (SR/Saline, Mich.) each ended up with six.
Maddie Huekels (JR/Dyer, Ind.) contributed a major 27 assists in the match, with Sunni Blanchard (SO/Pierre Part, La.) chipping in 13. On the defensive side, Beckham and Obioha both had five blocks on the day. Helene Masone (FR/Destin, Fla.) led the team with 24 digs, with Blanchard and Huekels each contributing eight digs.
The SSAC Volleyball Championship continues tomorrow, Nov. 10. Loyola's first match is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. against second-seeded William Carey, with the second match of the day slated for 3 p.m. against Middle Georgia.
