Loyola Volleyball Falls to Xavier 3-1

The Wolf Pack will close out the regular season with a pair of matches on Saturday in The Den, with SSAC foe William Carey opening the action at 11 a.m. and cross-town rival Dillard slated for a 3 p.m. start.

Juliana Tomasoni had game highs with 13 kills and 20 digs to lead Xavier University of Louisiana to a 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-18, 25-13) victory over Loyola University New Orleans Tuesday night in The Den.  

 

In the opening set, Xavier scored the first five points of the match and later extended the margin to 12-4 with a service ace from  Kayla Black.  Loyola rallied with 10 of the next 12 points on a pair of kills by Allison Hartmann (JR/Slidell, La.) to pull the Pack within a point 14-13.  Xavier closed out the set, outscoring Loyola 11-3 over the final 14 points to take the frame 25-16.

 

In the second set, the Wolf Pack utilized a .375 hitting percentage to even the match.  Loyola never trailed and held a 19-16 lead late in the frame.  Lindsay Ulfig (SR/Saline, Mich.)'s kill widened the Loyola advantage to 20-16.  She added another put away at 21-17 as the Pack closed the set 25-19.

 

With the match knotted at one set each, Loyola led briefly in the third set as Ulfig added one of her team high nine kills to give the Wolf Pack the 5-4 margin.  Xavier secured the next five points capped by a kill by Vivica Price-Spraggins.  Later, Loyola came within two points at 15-17 capitalizing on an attack error by Price-Spraggins.  Xavier would not relinquish the lead, winning eight of the next 11 points to close out the set 25-18.

 

Xavier (20-2) closed out the match with an impressive 17-5 run over the last 22 rallies in the fourth and deciding set.  The Gold Nuggets attacked at an impressive .303 percentage in the frame, while holding the Wolf Pack to .033.  

 

For Loyola, Hartmann had eight kills at a .438 clip and added two blocks.  Anna Katherine Brunni led the back row with a team high 12 digs, while Maddie Huekels (JR/Dyer, Ind.) had 17 assists.
